Elsie Kohring Mertins age 97, of Brenham passed away on May 9, 2015 at Brenham Rest Home. Elsie was born February 4, 1918 in William Penn, Texas, to Fritz and Sophia Gaskamp Kohring. She was baptized March 17, 1918 by Pastor Bohot in Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn and was confirmed April 9, 1933 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church by Pastor Carl Appel. She was married to Walter Mertins at her parents'' home by Pastor Appel on October 31, 1940. She joined Grace Lutheran Church in 1965 where she was a faithful member of the church and of the Lutheran Women''s Missionary League for over 40 years. She and her beloved and faithful husband had a very happy and Christian marriage for 66 years. She was a homemaker and gardener. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Walter "Ducky" Mertins; 3 brothers, Henry, Robert, and Otto Kohring; and 2 sisters, Paula Pohlmeyer and Rosa Lee Lueckemeyer. Three sisters and 1 brother died in infancy. She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Matthew Jacobs and William Holzer officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11 at Memorial Oak Chapel. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Lee Kohring, Valgene Kohring, Daryl Lueckemeyer, Duane Lueckemeyer, Fred Kohring, Louis Schwarze, and David Sommerfeld. Memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.
