Jane Blount Murphy of Burton went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 9, 2023 and is now holding the hand of her beloved husband, John Michael Murphy.
Jane grew up in Waynesboro, Georgia and graduated from South Georgia College. She went on to become a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, until she met a charming man who swept her off her feet. Jane married John Michael Murphy on July 25, 1959 in Waynesboro, Georgia. They later moved from Atlanta to Houston for John to continue working as a pilot for Delta Airlines. In her thirties, Jane was diagnosed with cancer, but boldly told the doctor “God did not give me my boys to take me from them”, and was always very thankful to have survived that terrible disease. Jane and John moved their little family to Burton in 1970, where she resided in the home they built together until God called her home.
Jane, lovingly referred to as Granny by many, touched so many lives with her genuine kindness and unwavering Faith. She always put the needs of others before her own, and was quick to offer help to all in need. Jane was a children’s leader in Bible Study Fellowship and taught Sunday School for a number of years. Her favorite things were spending time with family and friends, watching old movies, and solving crossword puzzles. She lived for her weekly Bridge games and adored her many friends and partners across Brenham and Bryan/College Station. Jane’s spunky personality never grew old. If you asked Jane her age, she would simply state, “I’m not going to tell you that today.” She was notorious for having her eyes closed in pictures or saying “cheese” just as the camera snapped. Anytime a meal was served to her, she was able to “eat on it for a week” or it would certainly “make a good sandwich”.
Jane is survived by her sons Michael John Murphy and wife, Kimberly Murphy of Burton and James Alden Murphy and wife, Susan Murphy of Giddings. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jara Maureen (Murphy) D’Oliver and husband, John D’Oliver of Leander, James Michael Murphy and wife, Alexis Salinas of Katy, and Juliana Marie (Murphy) Blanchard and husband, Daniel Blanchard of Cedar Park. In addition, Jane is survived by her step grandchildren: Matt Dees and wife, Nicole of Troy, Texas and Michael Dees of Temple and step great-grandchildren Robbie, Carter, and Araia Dees. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Bob Lovett of Hamilton, Montana along with numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate of 54 years, John Michael Murphy, her parents, Perry Blount and Mary Lou Williams Blount, her brother Joe Blount, brothers and sisters-in-law: Edca and Louise Blount, Perry Jr. and Pauline Blount, and James and Pat Blount. She was also preceded in death by her sister Linda Lovett and sisters and brothers-in-law: Viana West and Henry West and Virginia Glisson and Billy Glisson.
