Alan Martin Schmidt, 57, husband of Katie Schafer Schmidt, died February 6, 2016 in New Mexico.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 12, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Brenham with Rev. C. Kay Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
Alan Schmidt was born May 22, 1958 in Houston to Hilmer Clarence and Nelda Faye Lewis Schmidt. He was a 1976 graduate of Vanguard High School of Ocala, Florida.
An auctioneer and entrepreneur, Alan was employed in the produce and auto industries. He loved animals, including horses, dogs and birds, and was especially fond of his dogs, Chloe, Hannah, and Ruthie. Close to nature, Alan loved the outdoors, and was an avid golfer, enjoying the mountains and the ocean most of all. A proud husband, daddy, and grandpa, he cherished time spent with his family. Helping others brought him great joy, and he was involved in numerous community activities to benefit others. Alan was a very active member of First United Methodist Church in Fulshear, Tx. before moving to New Mexico.
Survivors include his wife, Katie Schmidt of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; daughters and sons-in-law Meagan Lee and Derek Hargrave of Brenham, and Mallory and Adam Cervas of Cypress; grandchildren: Peyton Clare Hargrave and Zoey Cervas; brother, Norman Schmidt of Cleveland, TN., and a sister, Sue Polwart of Pensacola, Florida.
Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilmer and Faye Schmidt, and a sister, Darla Henson.
Serving as pallbearers are Derek Hargrave, Kevin Heil, Bobby Henson, David Mangel, Jim Hardin, Tim McCord, Michael Wilkins, and Shannon Donaway. Honorary pallbearers are Adam Cervas, Lloyd Cooke, Boyd Nutt, Bill Nutt, Don Aken, Craig Butler, Augustine Saldana, Jr., Trey Wise, Mark Wiatrek, Morgan Mohre, and Charlie Lewis, Jr.
Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project or Special Olympics.
