Albert Hafer, Jr. went to be with his Lord in Heaven on November 2, 2022 at the age of 90. Al was born July 2, 1932 to Albert and Esther (Drews) Hafer who lived outside Brenham in the Prairie Hill community. There they owned and operated Hafer’s General Store for 50 years. Al was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill. He attended Brenham High School, Blinn College and graduated from the University of Houston with an Engineering degree. Al enjoyed playing guitar in the Country Western Band The Trail Riders under the leadership of Clarence Witt. He served in the US Army during ‘56 and ’57 with the Signal Corp in France.
On April 13, 1958 he married Amanda Rosenbaum and began their 64-year marriage in the Dallas area. There they raised 2 children, Michael and Heidi. Al was with Texas Instruments for 35 years as a Manufacturing Engineer. He also coached his children in many sports. He became a Boy Scout leader for his son’s troop and saw Mike become an Eagle Scout. Most important in Al’s life was his walk with the Lord and his Church. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Richardson, now in Plano, where he served in many capacities from Elder to Sunday School Superintendent to church maintenance. Once he retired, he and Amanda moved back to Brenham where they joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the William Penn community and served His Lord there. He also worked part-time at Ace Hardware, and gained the reputation as the man to go to if you needed to “fix” anything. Most special memories include the many visits from his children and grandchildren.
Al is survived by his wife Amanda, son Rev. Michael Hafer, pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran in College Station, and wife Michelle (Theiss), director of Holy Cross Preschool; daughter Heidi (Hafer) Miertschin of Johnson City where she teaches 4th grade and husband Bill with the Railroad Commission of Texas. 4 grandchildren: Joshua Hafer and wife Abby, Jessica (Hafer) Simpson and husband Alex, Laura Miertschin and Willie Miertschin; sisters-in-law Norma Fruend and Adele Mensik, Lorene Hold and other cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Esther Hafer, Aunt Minnie Fuchs, uncles Clarence and Henry Hafer, and Amanda’s parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
Pall bearers are Dr. Henry Bohne, Bill Bohne, Joshua Hafer, Willie Miertschin, Alex Simpson, Joe Wilson and honorary pall bearer John Hold.
