Alford Grady Canterbury, 82, of Brenham, died Nov. 12, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Mr. Canterbury was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Homer, Louisiana, to A.G. and Lucille Bullock Canterbury. He was a graduate of Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Louisiana. Mr. Canterbury was baptized in the Baptist faith in Atlanta, Louisiana. Mr. Canterbury served in the Navy during World War II. On August 3, 1946, he was married to Clara Belle Prestridge in Emanuel Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Brenham and enjoyed playing dominoes. He retired from the dairy business after 27 years and was employed for 13 years as a creamery worker. Survivors include his wife, Clara Belle Canterbury of Brenham; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Harold G. Hohlt and Martha and Alan Pittman, all of Brenham; five grandchildren, Patrick Hohlt and wife Jennifer, Michael Hohlt, Rachel Hohlt, Ashlea Schroeder and husband Justin and Megan Pittman and special friend Chris Schramme; great-grandchildren, Kyle William Hohlt and Baby Schroeder due in December; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and W.T. Eason and Louise Helverson, all of Shreveport, Louisiana and Melba and Alton Middleton of Mansfield, Louisiana; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, all of Shreveport, Louisiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; and three sisters. The family will receive visitors from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Memorial Oaks Chapel with Rev. Steve Ponder officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Mr. Canterbury s sons-in-law and grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Kruse, Kervin Finke, Larry Gomer Kieke, Walter Krueger and all special friends from Blue Bell Creameries and Bluebonnet Hills Care Center. Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.
