Alice Grawunder

Alice Lavernia Bockhorn Grawunder died Feb. 13, 2018 in Austin.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, February 19, 2018 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Brianna Merkle officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until service time at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Alice (Bockhorn) Grawunder was born February 5, 1926 in Brenham to Henry Jr. and Alma (Hohlt) Bockhorn. She was baptized May 9, 1926 by Pastor Arthur Hartmann at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham. On March 17, 1940, she was confirmed in the same church by Pastor Theo. R. Streng. She attended Alamo Elementary School, Central School, and graduated from Brenham High School in 1943. On June 20, 1948, she was married to Ewald E. Grawunder, Jr. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham.

Alice taught Sunday School in Brenham before her marriage. She also taught at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Beaumont, and later taught at Peace Lutheran Church of Rosenberg. She also worked at a local day care center in Rosenberg.

She helped organize Junior Lutherans of Peace Lutheran Church of Rosenberg, serving as chairman for a number of years. She also served in the same church as stewardship secretary, president, secretary, and treasurer of the Women’s Organization. Alice also worked as a typesetter for The Herald Coaster News in Rosenberg, and was later employed by the Ft. Bend County tax Office. After her move back to Brenham, she became an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ewald Grawunder,Jr. of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Linda Grawunder of Leander; grandchildren: Jeanna Hernandez and husband Keith of Round Rock, Lisa Huff and husband Tony of Cedar Park, and Thomas Grawunder and wife, Stephanie of Brenham; great-grandchildren: Taylor Grawunder, Luke Hernandez, Ansley Grawunder, Easton Huff, Carter Grawunder, Brady Huff, and Audrey Hernandez, who is due next month. Also surviving is a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Larry Stark.

Preceding Alice in death were her parents, an infant son, David Charles Grawunder; brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Helen Bockhorn, and sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Leroy Nordt.

Serving as pallbearers are Larry Bockhorn, Jeff Stark, Jon Stark, Lee Nordt, Brandon Stark, and Thomas Grawunder. Marvin Bockhorn and Garrison Nordt will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
