Almot Sommerfeld

Almot Fritz Sommerfeld, 99, husband of Sydonia Zander Sommerfeld, passed away November 10, 2016 in Brenham.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, November 14, 2016 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastors Phil Fenton and Brianna Merkle officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Almot Sommerfeld was born June 8, 1917 in Washington County, Texas to Julius and Bertha Kurtz Sommerfeld. He was baptized at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and confirmed there on Sept. 17, 1933. On Nov. 18, 1945, he married Elsie Zuehlke, who preceded him in death. He married Sydonia Zander on Nov. 12, 1983.

Mr. Sommerfeld was a veteran of World War II, having been bestowed with a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was among those soldiers landing on Omaha Beach, and fought courageously for his country in the Battle of the Bulge. He later served with the Liberation Forces in Europe.

Mr. Sommerfeld was retired from Blue Bell Creameries.
Favorite pastimes included gardening, fishing with his wife, and tending to his cattle. Other hobbies included cooking, barbecuing and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Sydonia Sommerfeld of Brenham; daughters and sons-in-law Peggy and Milton Bosse of Brenham; Judy and Michael Griffin of Lake Jackson; Ellen Shields of Clifton; sons Howard and Betty Sommerfeld of Waco, and Jimmy Sommerfeld of Clifton; grandchildren: Sondra and Gerardo Hernandez, Amy Griffin, Justin and Hannah Bosse, and five step-grandchildren: great-grandchildren: Henry Hernandez, Annie Hernandez, Taylor Bosse; 13 step-great-grandchildren, and one step great-great grandchild; brother-in-law Paul Zuehlke of Bryan. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mr. Sommerfeld was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law Edward Johann and Frieda Knuppel Sommerfield, Wilhelm Friedrich and Lillie Dipple Sommerfeld, Albert Friedrich and Emma Schroeder Sommerfield, Melvin Heinrich and Martha Rosner Sommerfeld, and Leslie Louis and Marie Schwartz Sommerfield; sisters Lydia Sommerfeld, Lillie Bertha and Herman M. Weiss, Lena and Herbert Rodenbeck, and Celeste Louise and Henry H. Rosner; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Lillian Zuehlke, Herman and Malinda Weighat Zuehlke, W. F. and Deloris Bothe Zuehlke, Herbert and Dorothy Wiesepape Zuehlke, Mavis Wehring Zuehlke, and Nelda and Raymond Kankle.

Serving as pallbearers are Chad Church, Jimmy Sommerfield, Billy Kankle, Leslie Ringo, David Dahmann, Jimmy Sommerfield, Gerardo Hernandez, and Jeff Michoud. Honorary pallbearers are Fred Boaker, Howard Kruse, Authur Earl Zuehlke, Darrel Zuehlke, Robert "Butch" Meier, Alan Pittman, and all Blue Bell Creamery co-workers.
