Alvin Hahn

Mr. Alvin Robert Hahn died on March 28, 2011 at his home in Brenham, Texas. Mr. Hahn was born on August 13, 1915 in the Prairie Hill community. As did his parents, Michael John and Emma Louise Herrmann Hahn, Mr. Hahn enjoyed a long life embued with the love of family and a strong work ethic. His family lived in Prairie Hill until 1927 when they moved to the community of Gay Hill. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 29, 1931 at St. Peter''s Lutheran Church in Gay Hill, and his memorial verse was St. John 15:5: "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." On March 25, 1939 he married Annie Mae Shelburne in Somerville, Texas, and they were together until she passed away in January 2008. Mr. Hahn was a member of the Army civilian corps during World War II, and subsequently was employed in 1945 by Humble Oil/Exxon-Mobil in Katy, Texas. During his tenure at Exxon, Mr. Hahn was afforded the opportunity to receive an on-the-job education as a chemical engineer. Upon his retirement in 1973, Mr. Hahn continued to operate his business, Hahn Motor Sales, in Brenham, for many years. He kept up with his former colleagues over the years through his membership in the Exxon Annuitant Club. He was a 32 degree Mason and member of Graham Lodge No. 20, The Grand Lodge of Texas, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons for more than 50 years. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A. and Arabia Shriners, Houston/Brenham, Texas. Mr. Hahn was also a dedicated volunteer at St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran for many years. His family will always remember him in particular for his ability to fix anything, as well as his incredible memory, especially regarding the family trees and histories of the Gay Hill and Prairie Hill communities. Mr. Hahn is survived by his daughter, Milanne Hahn; his son and daughter-in-law Alvin Wayne and Barbara Hahn; grandson Alvin Robert Hahn II and his wife Jennifer and their children Sadie, Nathan, and Zachary; granddaughter Alicia Hahn Altman and her husband Wade and their children Avery, Andrew, and Austin; and granddaughter Amy Hahn Gainer and her husband Jan-Morgan; sister-in-law Carolyn Shelburne; brother-in-law Bill Barry; nieces Mary Ann Schulte, Jean Irby, Doris Johnson, and Phyllis Hensen; nephews Jimmie Hahn, Jr., Charles Ray Hahn, David Myrow, and George Cole Shelburne. He was predeceased by his brothers Walter Hahn, and Jimmie Andrew Hahn, Sr. and his wife Alma; sister Elsie Runge and her husband Edwin; sister Allyne Myrow and her husband Arnold; sisters-in-law Etta Belle Barry and Georgia Lee Krause; brother-in-law Ike Cole Shelburne; nephews Ronald Vinson and James Runge; and nieces Mary Pettit, Georgia Ann Tatum, and Jenny Jo Kessler. The family is grateful to Dr. Nathan Simons for the extraordinary and compassionate care he gave their loved one. The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham, Texas on Wednesday, March 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Hahn will be held at St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham on Thursday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m, with Pastor Phil Fenton officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Mr. Hahn''s pallbearers are: Alvin Robert Hahn II, Jimmie Hahn, Jr., Charles Ray Hahn, Charles Schulte, David Myrow, Howard Hannan, Jr., Wade Altman, and Jan-Morgan Gainer. His good friend and long-time gin rummy card partner, Mr. Melvin Kelm, will be an honorary pallbearer.
