Alvin is survived by his daughter, Debra Canady and son-in-law, John; grandson, Jed Canady; brothers/sisters-in-law, Emma Bell Neumann, Lorena Neumann, Mitzi Thornton, Calvin Kettler and his wife Lorene, Lehlia Kettler, and Daphne Kettler; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Nell Kettler Neumann; his parents, Otto and Margaret Neumann; siblings, Johnnie Neumann, Raymond Neumann, Gladys Brauner and her husband Edwin; brothers/sisters-in-law, Irene Kettler, Melvin Kettler and his wife Virginia, Weldon Kettler, RLee Kettler, and Bob Thornton; and parents-in-law, Ernest and Minnie Kettler.
Alvin grew up in the Williams community and lived most of his adult life in Brenham. He served briefly in the Navy during WWII before receiving a medical discharge. He worked for several local businesses through the years, including 12 years at Farmers-Merchants Lumber, and 23 years at Schleider Furniture where he served as credit manager and salesman. Alvin had been a member of St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church since his childhood.
Alvin was a hard-working, good-hearted man who loved to talk and joke with people and make them laugh. Service to others was a big part of his life, starting with family and neighbors, and extending to the community through his church, Kiwanis Club public service activities, and volunteer service for local organizations.
Before health problems limited his activities, Alvin enjoyed carpentry and DIY projects, including two major home renovations; and he loved to tinker with gadgets and machines to examine the way they worked and fix them if necessary. He enjoyed physical activity, and after his retirement could often be seen walking through his neighborhood and through downtown Brenham.
Alvin was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He especially treasured the time he was able to spend with his grandson, Jed. The two of them had many adventures together.
Alvin was greatly loved, and he will be greatly missed.
