Alvin Neal “Scooter” Schroeder, 82, passed away on June 15, 2024. With a quick wit, his little smirk and great sense of humor, Scooter could light up a room and bring a smile to the face of those fortunate enough to have a conversation with him. He was kind, appreciative, grateful and always concerned with the well-being of his family and others. He enjoyed life and was one of a kind!
Al was born on August 13, 1941, to Stella Mae (Viereck) and Alvin “Beanie” Schroeder in Brenham, Texas. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and graduated from Brenham High School. His love for his hometown of Brenham was well known – and he never tired of telling stories of his youth, his family and friends.
Al was a proud graduate of Sam Houston State University. After college, he went to work as an insurance claims adjuster for Continental Insurance. That first job led him into a lifelong career in the insurance claims business working for Underwriters Adjusting Company (UAC), CNA, Panhandle Eastern Pipeline and Duke Energy. As a claims manager and insurance consultant, he earned many accolades for his knowledge and excellent service for the benefit of all parties. At each stop, he made dear friendships that would last a lifetime.
Al married Faye Stelter, his high school sweetheart, in August of 1961. They had two daughters, Suzanne and Lori. His girls were his pride and joy! In October of 1982, Al married Judee Utgard. With that union, DeeDee and David became family. Al & Judee resided in the Houston area – again making friends along the way. He loved Houston almost as much as he loved Brenham.
Scooter will be remembered as a loving son, protective big brother, devoted husband, the best Dad, supportive father-in-law, proud Grandpa and loyal friend. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, good music, cold beer, driving his Ford Mustangs, football – especially the Texas Longhorns, Houston Oilers and later the Houston Texans. He attended more football games, concerts, Nascar and Indy 500 races than anyone can count. He also enjoyed history, hunting and golf, even sinking a hole in one in 1995!
In the last three years, Al moved to Burnet to be close to Suzanne, Trey and Hayden. He became a beloved member of the Wildflower Meadows family. Days were spent hanging out on the porch with the “hens”, listening to his old country and rock and roll records while enjoying coffee or a cold beer or two! As his favorite, Bob Seger, sang – “Let’s pull those old records off the shelf.” He always thought we should put out a tip jar for the many visitors he received. The family will be forever grateful for the friendships made and the loving care he received from his amazing caregivers.
Al is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Schroeder Brown and husband, Trey and grandson, Hayden; stepdaughter, DeeDee Roberts and husband, Phil, and their children, Brandon and Brittany and their grandchildren, Jaxon, Ayla, Cruz, Colten, Jensen and Harper; stepson, David Wilson and wife, Patty, and their children, Drexel and Scout; sister, Debbie Schroeder Fickessen; niece, Jami Robinson; and nephew, Chase Fickessen. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Judee; beloved daughter, Lori and brother-in-law, Jack Fickessen.
Serving as Pallbearers are Trey Brown, Hayden Brown, Chase Fickessen, Phil Roberts, Melvin Ehlert and Scott Ehlert.
Scooter loved his dogs! He and Judee adopted many cocker spaniels over the years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas at cockerkids.org or Living Grace Canine Ranch at livinggracecanineranch.org.
