Age 95 of Brenham, affectionately known as AB, our beloved mother, grandmother, great –grandmother, aunt, cousin. and friend, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2012. An ambassador bound for the heavenly realm left without notice. She was born December 19, 1916, to Thornton and Mamie Cheeks Mc Cowan she is preceded in death by her late Husband Walter Henderson Sr. Passionately she achieved a life work of helping others. AB started as a young girl developing a work ethic that led her into young womanhood doing chores when the labor market was meager and it took a full day''s work just to make a dollar. In 1948 she became a member of ST John African Methodist Episcopal Church, since that time until her demise she has served in many capacities of the church, Steward Board, Trustees, Life Member of the Annie Estelle Missionary Society, celestial choir just to name some of endeavors and to say she did not let age slow her down. Some milestones that have marked this trailblazers journey, was her first time flying that jetted her and 55 others, to see the first African American become the 44th President of the United States of America. In 2011 she was crowned queen in category 2 churches, in the 10th District Queen Ester pageant. Queen AB received a standing ovation as she joined the other queens and their escort''s, in a parade around the court. AB was also a sister of the Order Eastern Star, Queen of Sheba Lodge. She was recently honored as the mother of St John African Methodist Church. She was active in the community as board member of the Brenham Heritage Museum, and the Washington County democratic committee. She was totally committed to serving and helping those came in touch with. AB''s lifelong testimony has been that if I can help somebody along the way then my living will not be in vain. She can be quoted as saying, "I love Everybody." She leaves to mourn her sudden departure three children Annie A. Henderson, Walter Henderson JR and Rev. James E. Mc Cowan Sr. Jo; 3 grand Children: DonniePenny , James,Altica Marcus; 9 great grand-children.; 1 great- great- grand A host of nieces and nephews, She has also Children from another mother: Covington''s, Kruse''s, Van Dykes, Stuckert''s, In lieu of flowers arrangements have been made with Brenham National for Memorial and the various endeavors the AB so diligent supported. Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at St. John A.M.E. with burial in H.I.C. Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham.
