Audrey Mae (Sommers) Boney, 94, of Brenham passed away Monday, May 27, 2024.
She was born April 8, 1930, in Navasota, Texas to Oskar and Rhea Marie (Horstmann) Sommers.
Audrey impacted the souls of literally thousands, all of whom are better for knowing her, even if they no longer remember her.
As a teacher, she improved the lives of more than 5,000 of her health students during a 35-year career in the public schools. As an aunt or mother, she taught her son, nieces and nephews how to sail, water ski, and swim, either on the Nueces River at her cabin, or on Padre Island rooting through the sand for the best seashells and rocks the ocean left behind.
As an artist, she created from broken dishes jewelry as small as a quarter, and from stained glass panels as tall as the parishioners at Salem Lutheran Church who requisitioned them. All of her nieces and nephews, as well as her son, have received a custom stained -glass heirloom that reflects their personality. Audrey also used her artistic talent to provide arts and crafts to those at Brenham Nursing and Rehab.
As a genealogist, Audrey produced detailed profiled of the Horstmann, Sommers, and Boney families, tracing their lineage back centuries. Never one to give less than full commitment to her cause, Audrey traveled through Germany seeking any information that might fill the picture of the family’s distant relatives.
In these ways, Audrey will live on in those whose lives she touched – from a former student who shops a healthier diet, to her family who has passed on her recreational knowledge to their children, to all those who proudly display her art, and those in the family who want to delve into their heritage.
Audrey will always be with us.
