Avilda D. Schroeder, 91, of Brenham, widow of William H. Schroeder, passed away September 8, 2008 in Kruse Village. Avilda was born January 13, 1917 in the Sandy Hill Community in Washington County to Martin H. and Minnie Engelage Sommer. She was one of seven children, including two sisters and four brothers. She was baptized February 18, 1917 in St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill by Pastor Apfelbach, and confirmed there on March 20, 1932 by Pastor Gogolin. She attended church regularly, arriving at church as well as at school, on horseback. She attended school through the ninth grade and received her diploma to enter high school but never enrolled. On July 21, 1940, at the age of 23, she was married to William H. Schroeder at St. John Lutheran in Prairie Hill, also by Pastor Gogolin. After three years of marriage, Mr. Schroeder was drafted into the Army. During his three years in the service, they saw each other one week in Abilene before he was shipped overseas. Mrs. Schroeder was housewife. She sewed for herself, her sister, her mother, and her friends. She also enjoyed gardening. She was a member of St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #48, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7104 Auxiliary, a member of D.A.V. Chapter 139, and a member of the National Assoc. of Federal Retired Employees, Chapter 726. Avilda was very active in the Veterans Organizations where she visited widows of the veterans and helped them with their person affairs. She and her husband spent a lot of their spare time together. They enjoyed fishing and hunting deer and quail. Surviving is a sister-in-law, Lillie Sommer of Brenham, nieces and nephews Earline and Henry Moody of Corpus Christi, Charlie and Nancy Sommer of Brenham, Peggy Tiemann of Brenham, Audrey and Jerry West of Bay City, Debbie and Ralph Tiemann of Brenham, David and Beth Sommer of Brenham, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services for Avilda D. Schroeder will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pastor Lawrence Bade will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Pallbearers are Charlie Sommer, Randy Tiemann, Dale Tiemann, Brian Tiemann, Wade Tiemann, and Michael Tiemann. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul''s Christian Day School. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham.
