Barbara Winkler

Barbara Elaine Young Winkler, 65, of Brenham, was born February 19, 1947 in Spur, Texas, to Newman and Shirley Hanson Young, as the 4th of 5 children. She passed away March 29, 2012 in Temple after a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara graduated Patton Springs High school, and attended South Plains College in Levelland, TX. She played basketball, volleyball, and softball, and was a member of the marching band. A cheerleader, she was also very involved in 4-H activities. She participated in public speaking events, and won many ribbons and awards. Barbara was also a member of the Future Homemakers of America and was named the FFA sweetheart for the Dickens County Stock Show. On July 8, 1996, Barbara married the love of her life, Roy Winkler. Roy and Barbara lived in Lubbock for many years, where they raised their sons. A member of St. John''s United Church of Christ in Burton, she was also a member of the Sarah Evening Circle of UCC, the EEA Greenvine Club, as well the Red Hat Society. Sewing and beading were favorite hobbies. She had retired as an office manager of a local business. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, March 31 in St. John''s United Church of Christ in Burton, with Rev. Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Interment is scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, April 2 in the Afton Cemetery in Afton, TX. The family will receive friends and relatives Friday evening from 6 until 7 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham and Sunday evening from 6 until 7 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Spur, TX. Survivors include her husband, Roy Winkler of Brenham; mother, Shirley Barton of Slaton; son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Lynette Winkler of Coppell, and Shane Winkler of Big Horn, WY; grandchildren: Blake Winkler and Delaney Winkler; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Young of Burton; sisters and brothers-in-law Chloe Nell and Earl Anderson of Lubbock, and Linda and Dalton Walton of Snyder. Other surviving relatives include Glenn and Lenora Jones, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Newman Young, an infant son, Shelby Lynn Winkler, and a brother, Manuel Dean Young. Serving as pallbearers are Gary Jones, David Jones, Jeff Young, James Young, Randy Young, and Larry Clyde Winkler.
