Bernice Lavon Hauck Mullins, 96, of Brenham, widow of Melborn Mullins, died on October 25, 2014 at her home. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Hempstead Cemetery with Reverend Sam Duree officiating. Visitation with the family and friends will be on Monday, October 27 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Bernice was born on January 21, 1918 to James Clinton and Alta Bertha Calhoun Hauck in Hempstead. On October 18, 1938 Bernice married Melborn Mullins. Bernice was the perfect homemaker. Everything was spotless and uncluttered in her home. Our holiday meals were feasts for the eyes and tummies. She started early for Christmas treats. Her pralines, melt-in-your-mouth fudge, divinity, and several other classic candies would always be ready and abundant on time. Since daddy enjoyed working with his hives of honey bees, she worked right along side squeezing the pure, sweet honey form the honeycomb and bottling fresh honey for us and all the friends and neighbors. There was always fresh honey and butter to spread on toast at breakfast—just another "sweet" memory. Her mom was a professional seamstress and Mom was skilled in the art of sewing as well. She didn''t get to sew much for her son, but she made most of the clothes for herself and her daughter. Being voted "Best Dressed" in High School was a huge thank you to Mom for all the hours she spent sewing beautiful clothes for me. It was like having a famous designer creating my wedding gown as well. Mom could do it all and was a perfectionist in all she did. In thinking back, it must be said that what she did for us was proof of her love for us. It was all hard work and took all of her time. As the years began to add up, she had to give up so many things she had always done for us. It hurt her to feel she couldn''t GIVE as she had all her life. Now, at 3 months form the age of 97, she always asked me, Don''t I have a job? I need to be doing something." There is a time for all things. A time for work and a time to rest. I guess that is why the saying "Rest in Peace" fits so many of our loved ones when we have to endure the final earthly separation. It is time to find the peace in the rest that comes.
