Mrs. Bettie Ethel Garrett, 100, of Brenham, died Jan. 24, 2007, in Houston. Mrs. Garrett was born Sept. 17, 1906, in Brenham, to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morris. She was a graduate of Pickard High School in Brenham. Mrs. Garrett was a retired licensed vocational nurse. She was a life member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church of Brenham. Mrs. Garrett received numerous awards and acknowledgements within the community. She was a Gold Star mother and registrar of deeds for Magnolia Court #17 Courts of Calanthe. She was also a member of Tommy Harris Post American Legion, AARP, Democratic Women and Brenham Civic Club. Mrs. Garrett was an honorary member of Pickard High School reunion committee and a member of the PTO at the high school. She was a founder of the SHAPe program and worked with the Goodfellows. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Garrett of Houston; two granddaughters, Bettye Johnson and Cynthia LaMour, both of Houston; two grandsons, David Walker of Boston, MA and Frank Walker, Jr. of Houston; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Wade Garrett; a son, George Sledge Garrett, who died while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II; two brothers; two sisters; and a grandson. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Memorial Oaks Chapel with Rev. Cecil McDowell officiating. Burial will be in HIC Cemetery in Brenham.
