Betty Cockrell

Betty Dean (Keeling) Godfrey Tipps Cockrell, 85, of Hempstead, died Jan. 2, 2017, in Bryan.

A memorial service will be Thursday, Jan. 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Pine Island Baptist Church in Pine Island, with Larry Edwards officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Menard Cemetery in Menard, with Charles Williams officiating.

Mrs. Cockrell was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Miles, TX, to William Pitt and Eva Dean (Holland) Keeling. On July 3, 1947, she was married to James Floyd Godfrey. He died Oct. 13, 1982. On Aug. 25, 1985, she was married to Bobby Tipps. He died Feb. 16, 1990. She later married Clarence Cockrell. Mrs. Cockrell was a retired registered nurse.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Cockrell of Hempstead; son and daughters-in-law, James and
Karen Godfrey and Mary Godfrey, all of Hempstead; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Bob Challenger of Galveston, Linda and Windy Roberts of Fayetteville, Kathy Jollie and JoAnne and Carl Groat of Miles; brothers, Alfred Eldon Keeling of Hobbs, NM and Bobby Roy Keeling of San Angelo; 24 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Floyd Godfrey; second husband, Bobby Tipps; son, Jerry Godfrey; and brothers, Willie Lee Keeling and Charles Theodore Keeling.
The family suggests memorials be given to a favorite heart association.
