Birdie Bertha Mewis, 89, of Comfort, Texas, died April 11, 2005, in a Kerrville hospital. Mrs. Mewis was born Nov. 22, 1915, in Industry, Texas, to Edwin Louis and Clara Bertha Schiller Teufel. She was baptized in St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville and attended Industry schools. On Dec. 31, 1939, she married A.C. Mewis. For 17 years she was a residence hall supervisor at Blinn College, retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Charles Pete and Connie Mewis of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and A.C. Wessels of Kerrville; three grandchildren, Daphne Parrott and husband Kevin, Holly Mewis, and Rhett Mewis and wife Rhonda; three great-grandchildren, Lance Parrott, Justin Parrott and Zachary Mewis; brother and sister-in-law, Kermit and Lorraine Teufel of Brenham; brother-in-law, Russ Witt of Roswell, New Mexico; and sister-in-law, Ella Mae Teufel of Brenham. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Clara Teufel; her husband, A.C. Mewis; four brothers; and one sister. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 14 at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham with Pastor Kim Little-Brooks officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Memorials may be given to St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham, the Alzheimer s Association or the charity of your choice. Service arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
