Bobbie Jo was born in El Reno, Oklahoma on January 11, 1930. She was the only child of Dee Robbins Sorrells and James Thomas Sorrells. Her parents were farm kids who worked their way through college at Oklahoma A & M, now Oklahoma State University, in order to have professional careers. Bobbie Jo was very proud of them and loved them deeply.
She grew up in Houston, TX in the Heights neighborhood from 1931 to 1945 attending school at one point where her mother was a teacher. In the 9th grade, she was given the coveted American Legion Award for outstanding girl at Hamilton Jr. High. Bobbie Jo was always very proud of this honor.
Her father's job with Piccadilly Cafeterias took them to Baton Rouge, LA, in 1946 and on to Beaumont, TX in 1947 and '48 where Bobbie Jo graduated from Beaumont High School.
In the fall of 1948 she entered Baylor University and it was there, in 1949 she met the love of her life, Jud Alexander. She and Jud married in June of 1951 and moved to Oceanside, CA where Jud was in training at Camp Pendleton with the US Marine Corps. Bobbie Jo always said it was the best of times living in Oceanside as newlyweds.
Following Jud's deployment to Korea in December of 1951, Bobbie Jo moved back to Waco to live with her parents while finishing her degree at Baylor. She graduated with a BA in English and Education in 1952. She taught school in Waco until Jud returned from Korea. They moved back to California where Jud's military service was completed. While living in Oceanside, their first child, Alison, was born.
After Jud's discharge from Marine Corps, they moved to Pearland, TX where Bobbie Jo taught school and they had their second child, Jud, Jr. The young family moved to Chappell Hill, TX in January of 1956 to operate the Alexander family farm in the Brazos River bottom.
Bobbie Jo joined the Chappell Hill Ladies Canasta Club to get acquainted in the community and made many new friends. Soon they had their third child, Jay. The family built a new house and moved to Brenham in 1965. From then on, Bobbie Jo was busy volunteering at her children's schools and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed her ladies bridge club for the next 40 years.
After her husband Jud became the Gulf Oil distributor in 1972, she began to enjoy many company related travels. She also loved family trips to Colorado and Grand Cayman Island.
In 1982 Bobbie Jo and Jud built a lake house at Lake Belton, which became their almost every weekend getaway for the next 30 years. Bobbie Jo and Jud also enjoyed traveling with the Brenham Golf Group for 20 years.
