Carra Zimmermann

November 3, 1941 — August 24, 2018

Carra Elizabeth Hohlt Zimmermann passed away after a sudden cancer-related illness on Aug. 24, 2018, leaving behind her loving family and many, many friends. She was a non-stop energetic 76 who until recently could still out work her children and even the grandkids.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg with pastor Denise Seymour officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery. Family will be receiving friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 27, 2018 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

She was a true Texas country woman. She loved being outside, riding her tractor, feeding her cows, watering her plants, mowing the grass. She was the toughest, strongest woman imaginable, mixed with an amazing ability to make friends and always put everyone else first.

Some of her earliest memories were of picking cotton in her father’s fields as a three-year-old, and she grew up helping work the family land in Washington County.

She was born Nov. 3, 1941 to Edmund and Benita Kiel Hohlt. She was the youngest of three children: Marvin and Elmer were her beloved older brothers. Carra attended the Harrisburg School before going to Brenham High School, where she graduated from in 1960.

She attended one semester of college at Texas Lutheran College before returning to the Rehburg area to marry Rev. Raymond Lynn Zimmermann on April 16, 1961 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rehburg, Texas. After three years, they moved to a church in Floresville, where they lived until moving to College Station, Texas.

She grew up listening to baseball with her father and brothers, and she loved Astros baseball, and followed the team from its days as the Colt 45s. She attended the very first game in the Astrodome, saw Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the dome and followed the team through the years until she experienced the World Series championship in 2017 by attending Games 3, 4 and 5.

A lifelong Aggie fan, Carra took full advantage of living in College Station by holding season tickets for 42 years. She suffered and rejoiced through the years of Aggie football, and one of her prized possessions was a newspaper sports page when Gene Stalllings’ Aggies beat Bear Bryant’s Alabama team that she had signed by both coaches.

In College Station, Carra dedicated 26 years to the children of South Knoll Elementary as the school secretary who did everything for the students. She was fortunate to have her children and several grandchildren attend that school as well.

She returned to Washington County and started a new career, studying for and passing the pharmacy technician exam to join the staff at Norman’s Pharmacy. She loved making the rounds of the Brenham nursing homes, making friends everywhere she went, as part of her job. She made many close friends through her work at Norman’s.

Nana to her nine grandchildren, she was always doing something, especially cooking their favorite “Nana” foods when they came to visit. She was especially known for her lemon meringue pie and her chocolate cake. She always had Blue Bell ice cream in the freezer, both for her and the grandkids.

She is survived by her children: Rebeca Carra Zimmermann (husband Donn Friedman), Jennifer Kay Zimmermann and Jeffrey Ray Zimmermann (wife Yvonne Zimmermann); grandchildren, Zev Friedman, Justin Zimmermann, Lauren Elizabeth Zimmermann, Ali Roberts, Eli Friedman, Rachel Zimmermann, Jaycee Seago, Jeffrey Zimmermann and Jace Zimmermann; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn Zimmermann, and brothers Marvin and Elmer Hohlt.

Donations may be made in her memory to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rehburg; Brazos Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
