Charles Crumb

Charles Stewart Crumb, 80, passed away on December 26, 2024. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas to John Haskell Crumb and Edna Adele Kanady Crumb, who preceded him in death, also preceded in death by brother John Delbert Crumb, brothers-in-law Larry Frances Smalley, Blaine Manuel and Allen Wayne Hueske. He was baptized at age 8 in South Main Baptist Church in Houston. He married Joyce (nee Hueske) Erfurdt in September 1990 and they spent 34 wonderful years together. Charlie brought three children to their marriage who are left to mourn his death: Nancy Frances Crumb, Amanda Chappell Crumb Benzman and Charles Haskell Crumb (Megan Richard). Joyce brought two sons to this union: Jeffrey Carl Erfurdt (Patricia Ontiveros Erfurdt) and Kevin Reed Erfurdt (Kary Wilson Gregg). They were blessed with seven grandchildren: Katherine Guynn Benzman, William Christman Cruthirds, Joseph Charles Cruthirds, Bodhi Oliver Crumb, Alexander Raymond Carl Erfurdt (Megan Hearst), Liam Santiago Erfurdt, and Logan Charles Erfurdt. Also great-grandsons Lindan Saint Johnson and Elijah Rayne Benzman. Missing him are sisters Kathleen Crumb Smalley and Christine Crumb Manuel, brother-in-law Marvin Lee Hueske (Cion Hueske), sister-in-law Kathleen Justiss Hueske, sister-in-law Cathy Hueske Vierus (Don Hickson).

Charlie also had many nieces and nephews, including Jennifer Wesolic Smith (Marc), Bill Wesolic (deceased), Chris Wesolic (deceased), Kim Fairbank Cunningham (Lenny), Joey Earle (deceased), Joshua Hueske (Lori), Will Hueske (Cara Beth), Allison Treviño (Raul), Emily Byers (Waylon), Jacob Vierus (Pam).

He will also be missed by numerous cousins, extended family and friends who he enjoyed spending time with and cared for deeply.

Charlie was a loving husband, father and grandfather ("Pop Pop"), who loved visiting and advising (when asked). He showed his love by attending any and all events that his family participated in. He had a way of making every occasion a joyous one. Charlie's young years were spent playing Little League baseball, taking piano lessons, bowling, throwing newspapers in his neighborhood, and being taught to golf by his father and maternal uncles. His love of sports continued into adulthood, as he perfected his bowling skills (won about 25 tournaments), played in company league softball until he was 44, golfed as often as he could; he played piano from age 9 until his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in 2019 impaired his ability to play. He enjoyed singing in the Second Baptist Choir (alongside Joyce) for more than 20 years. He also served as a Deacon and attended bible study class.

Charlie was a 1962 graduate of Brenham High School and that is where his friends named him "Zorro". He also attended Blinn College. Charlie maintained long-lasting relationships with the BHS/Blinn Hellions Group, who gathered monthly. He left school for a job opportunity at NASA, where he taught himself to program and was soon known as "Super" for his ability to solve computer issues. Later in his career he moved to Dallas to work for Action Communications where he installed a phone system that was the precursor to phone mail. He returned to NASA, where he retired while working for United Space Alliance. After retirement, he enjoyed visiting with family, friends and neighbors, finding new places to eat and watching the Rockets, Astros, Texans and college football and basketball.

The family is grateful for all of the prayers and blessings that were given, and to Vantage Hospice caretakers, nurses and night time sitters who blessed us with their kindness.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Second Baptist Church 6400 Woodway, Houston, Texas 77057.
