Services for Charles E. Nickles, 85, of Frankfort, Kentucky, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 10 in Independence Baptist Church in Independence, Texas, with Rev. D.H. Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery in Independence. Mr. Nickles died May 4, 2004, in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. A native of Frankfort, Kentucky, he was a graduate of Good Shepherd High School. He was a pilot for more than 56 years and airport manager in Brenham. He flew for Air America in Southeast Asia, was a flight instructor during WWII, a former bush pilot in Alaska where he once flew Jimmy Doolittle on a hunting party, and did crop dusting. He was also active in airplane restoration, a member of American Legion Post #7 and a member of the Baptist faith. Mr. Nickles was the son of the late Charles Nickles and Mary Haldi Nickles-Tracy. Survivors include his daughter, Deloros Karsner and two sisters, Elizabeth Mitchell and Helen Hartley, all of Frankfort, Kentucky; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Nickles; and two brothers, William J. Nickles and James P. Nickles. Expressions can be made to American Legion Post #7, 164 Versailles Rd., Frankfort, KY 40601. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
