Heaven welcomed home our beloved Charlie “Charlie Boy” Martin Sommer, 86, of Brenham, TX on July 9, 2022. Charlie was born to Gilbert and Rosa Lee (Randermann) Sommer on March 5, 1936 in Washington County. He was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church.
After graduating from Brenham High School in 1954, Charlie immediately went to work for Shell Oil Company. He worked in Oil Exploration and retired in 1992 after 37 years of exemplary service. He also served with honor in the Texas National Guard and The United States Army Reserve.
November 1, 1958, Charlie married Nancy (Robison) Sommer in Mount Pleasant, Texas. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage and were blessed with two children. Charlie is survived by his wife, Nancy Sommer. Children and their spouses, Sylvia and Blake Woodall and Don and Cindy Sommer. Grandchildren, Dayne and Erica Sommer, Katie Sommer and Hailey Holcomb; great grandchild, Aston Hampton. His sisters include Earline Moody, Peggy Tiemann and Debbie and Ralph Tiemann.
Charlie also enjoyed the love of nephews, Terry and Sue Moench, Randy and Jana Tiemann, Dale and Sonda Tiemann, Wade and Julie Tiemann, Brian and Natalie Tiemann, Michael and Heather Tiemann and numerous other great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
With a strong mechanical mind Charlie loved to build things and improve on designs or as he often called it “fashioning”. He loved working in the garden and sharing the fruits of that labor with family and friends either fresh or canned. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the Pleasant Hill Shooting Club, K & M Card Club and Roberts Roundtable.
Visitation for Charlie will be 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 14, 2022, with family present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 15, 2022 at St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem. With Pastor Evan Cameron officiating. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery.
