Clemence Lois Clark Stanley, 94, of Burton, died July 22, 2011 at College Station Medical Center in College Station. A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Bethany Christian Church Cemetery on Christian Cemetery Road near Burton with Bob Hofmann officiating. Mrs. Stanley was born March 26, 1917 in Houston, Texas, to Dr. James Howard and Gertrude Gosney Clark. She was a graduate of San Jacinto High School and a 1938 graduate of TCU with a major in Art and minor in Home Economics. On Nov. 10, 1939, she was married to John H. Stanley in Old Second Baptist Church in Houston. Mrs. Stanley was currently a member of Bethany Christian Church of Burton. A charter member of Second Baptist Church in Houston, she was an expert Bible teacher for a number of years and was always active in church life. A very creative person, Mrs. Stanley was a life-long artist who enjoyed painting, stained glass, crocheting and quilting. She showed her spirit by always singing and humming. Her grandchildren always knew she would be in the kitchen, cooking or humming or crocheting things for them. Gema will be greatly missed by her family. Survivors include her husband, John H. Stanley of Burton; sons and daughters-in-law; Jack and Trish Stanley of Plano, Lee Howard of Burton and Dennis A. and Robyn Stanley of Montana; daughter and son-in-law, Gherlaine S. and Bob Hofmann of Burton; sister, Miriam Harrison of Tyler; 10 grandchildren, Heidi Whitehead and husband Mark of Brenham, Alicyn Huddell and husband Walt of Pennsylvania, Robert S. Hofmann and wife Stephanie of New Braunfels, John T. Stanley of College Station, Dr. James H. Stanley and wife Tina of Wimberley, Lt. Commander Thomas A. Stanley and wife Tanya of California, Mathew Stanley and wife Donna of Liberty Hill, Lynn Tankersly and husband Darwin of Round Rock and Georgia Trimble and husband Brandon of Japan; great-grandsons, James, Jesse, Jack, Austen, Christopher, Liam, Lucas and William; great-granddaughters, Jordyn, Stephanie, Amy, Amber, Shelby, Lillian, Hope and Adele; step-great-grandchildren Frank and Ellen, two great-great-grandsons, Levi and L.J., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Amy Leigh Hofmann; and brother-in-law, Walter Harrison. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
