Dennis Maass

Dennis Maass, 69, husband of Evelyn Maass, passed away at his home in Giddings on May 1, 2013. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2013 at St. John''s United Church of Christ in Burton, with Pastors Glen Schoeneberg and Greg Felder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Memorials Oaks Chapel in Brenham. Dennis was born November 2, 1943 in the Gay Hill Community of Washington County to Carl "Charlie" and Meta Meyer Maass. He was baptized January 1, 1944 at St. John''s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Burton by Rev. Paul Kniker, and confirmed March 30, 1958 by Rev. E. H. Schwengel in the same church. He attended area schools, graduated from Brenham High School, and attended Blinn College. He became involved in the family dairy at a young age. On August 29, 1964, he married Evelyn Fay Matthies at St. John''s United Church in Burton by Rev. Jewel Johnson. He ended a 38 year career in rural electric service with Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative. Dennis served his community and church in numerous capacities. He was a member of the Giddings Breakfast Lions Club where he served as Secretary-Treasurer and Director. In 1991, Dennis was presented a Life Membership to the Texas Lions Camp in recognition of his support. He was awarded "Lion of the Year" for his service, loyalty and devotion to Lionism in 1993. He was also named a Lion Fellow by the Texas Lions Foundation for his outstanding contributions. Dennis was a member of the Giddings Athletic Booster Club, and the City of Giddings Planning and Zoning Commission. He also served as the Vice President of the Giddings Little League and was past Director of the LCRA Credit Union. Dennis was a lifelong member of the St. John''s United Church of Christ where he served on the Church Council, Budget, Long Range Planning and the Building Advisory Committees. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Fay Maass of Giddings; daughters Michelle Denise Maass of Giddings, and Melissa Dawn Maass of Temple; sister, Peggy Ann Edwards of Waller; brothers-in-law Dennis Mahlmann of Brenham, Lawrence Eben of Welcome, Mervin Maass of Burton, and sister-in-law, Marjorie Ann Thaler of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Meta Maass; mother-in-law and father-in-law, A. E. "Pop" and Lesta Matthies; sisters Verdell Mahlmann and Mae Dell Eben; brothers-in-law Jim Edwards and Eugene Thaler; sister-in-law Carrie May Maass; nephew Kevin Eben, niece Pamela Maass Oldham, as well as many beloved grand-puppies and grand-kitties. Serving as pallbearers are Leroy Lorenz, Allan Spurger, Herman Lange, Jr., David Lange, Daniel Borchgardt, Larry Glenz, Harry Namken, and Jerry Joe Vaughn. Honorary pallbearers are Donald Hudgins, Charles Harmel, Willie Prigge, George Pohorelsky, the St. John''s Building Advisory Committee, including Thea Agdern, Dr. Wilfred Dietrich, Linda Knipstein, Beverly Houston, Jodell Hodde, Pastor Glen Schoeneberg, and the late John and Marilee Hooper, as well as members of the Giddings Breakfast Lions Club. The family will be forever indebted to the special caregivers that allowed Dennis to be surrounded by his family and friends at home. Those caregivers included Micki Gutierrez, Brandi Waller, Edith Abdul-Haqq and Dr. Mary Meyers-Marquardt. Memorials may be directed to St. John''s United Church of Christ Building Fund, Giddings Breakfast Lion''s Club Den, or to the American Diabetes Association.
