Doris Jean Mayer Eckert, 74, of Brenham, died Sept. 17, 2011 at her residence, surrounded by her family. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Salem Lutheran Church of Salem with Pastor Charles Parnell officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Greenvine. Mrs. Eckert was born Jan. 6, 1937 in the Latium community, Washington County, Texas, to Leslie Marvin and Olga Lilia Leonhardt Mayer. She was baptized May 16, 1937 at Winedale Lutheran Church by Rev. H. Brunotte and confirmed May 13, 1951 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine by Pastor A.B. Weiss. She started her education at John B. Winn Elementary School in Austin, continued at Latium School and graduated from Burton High School in 1954. On July 27, 1958 she married Franklin Daniel Eckert at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine with Pastor Theo Sager officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Eckert made their home in Brenham. To this union five children were born. She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were growing up and later worked with her husband as secretary and bookkeeper. Mrs. Eckert was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Salem, and when her children were small she was very involved in Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She served as secretary of Mayer Cemetery Association, was an avid bowler, loved to fish, enjoyed researching her family history and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a writer of poems and short stories. She enjoyed singing with family members at reunions and other family gatherings. In later years she enjoyed singing with "Der Frohliche Gesangverein" Winedale German Singers. Survivors include her husband, Franklin Eckert of Brenham; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnnie and Debbie Eckert and Roger and Jackie Eckert, all of Brenham; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Joe Green, Karen and Allen Schulz and Julie and Tadd Maass, all of Brenham; sister and brother-in-law, Lydia Ann and Clenwood Heins of Burton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pearlie and Richard Hanath of Brenham; grandchildren, Lea Ann Schulz and special friend Anthony Hill, Jr., Lynette Green Nelson and husband Aaron, Scott Schulz and wife Janie, Michael Eckert and wife Marian, Aaron Green and special friend Hanna Molesky, Larissa Green and special friend Elliott Davis, Trevor Eckert and special friend Jill Randermann, Kristopher Eckert, Jordan Pieratt and Peyton Maass; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Ausby, Lillie Nelson, Maliah Ausby, Jahnni Schulz, Savannah Nelson, Laityn Davis, Chet Eckert and Easton Green; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Olga Leonhardt Mayer; parents-in-law, John W. and Lillie Bernshausen Eckert; brother-in-law, Charles C. Nienstedt. Pallbearers will be Scott Schulz, Michael Eckert, Aaron Green, Trevor Eckert, Kristopher Eckert, Jordan Pieratt and Peyton Maass. Honorary pallbearers were Lea Ann Schulz, Lynette Green Nelson, Larissa Green, Janie Schulz, Marian Eckert, Hanna Molesky, Jill Randermann, Aaron Nelson, Elliott Davis, Anthony Hill Jr., Dr. William Loesch and Dr. Raj Cheruku. Memorial contributions may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church of Salem, Compassionate Care Hospice of Bryan or Mayer Cemetery Association.
