Dorothy Porter

September 4, 1923 — November 17, 2004

Dorothy Ann Pinter Porter, who was born Sept. 4, 1923, died on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, in the care of her children and the staff of Duval Gardens in Austin. She was the widow of John Bradford Porter, to whom she was married for 46 years until his death in 1992. She was a daughter of Frank and Theresa Pinter, Czech farmers, of Dime Box, Texas. She attended school in Dime Box, Deanville, and Caldwell, and received her R.N. from Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing in Austin, Texas in 1945. She served as 2nd lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps in World War II. Mrs. Porter worked as a registered nurse for almost 60 years, most of those years in the Brenham community. She cared for hundreds of Brenham s citizens at St. Jude and Bohne hospitals, Sweetbriar, the Brenham State School, and through volunteer work in the community. Her reputation for professional competence is only exceeded by that of her selfless kindness to every person she came in contact with, seeing and serving the Lord Jesus in each one. She was, however, no respecter of persons, and had no trouble calling things as she saw them. She was the champion of many underdogs. Many who were young and high spirited in the 60 s, 70 s and 80 s remember her as Mama Porter, an endless source of meals and places to sleep and encouraging words. She never ran out of love. She was a lifelong Catholic and a devout and active parishioner at St. Mary s since 1955, which she has only left to join the Church Triumphant. Mrs. Porter leaves her five children: Patricia Porter Hanger of Austin, Michael Fred Porter of Lake Jackson, John Porter of Austin, Roo Porter of Martinsville, VA, and Rena Porter Fielding of Franklin County, VA. She also leaves her beloved granddaughters, Anastasia Felice Fielding of Franklin County, VA, Jessica Fielding of Martinsville, VA, Crystal Fielding of Townshend, VT, and Cleodhna Nightshade of Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Surviving her as well are her sister, Gloria Lemmon of Cleveland; and numerous family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents; five sisters; and four brothers. Her presence in this community will be greatly missed. The funeral Mass will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 in St. Mary s Catholic Church in Brenham with Father David Ivey, celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Brenham. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be John Porter, Michael Porter, Dick Mize, Doug Mize, Randy Schwartz and Paul Edward Kasprowicz. Honorary pallbearers will be David Schwartz, Jerry Schwartz, Elroy Schwartz, Harold Schwartz, Jr., Glenn Wohltmann, Mark Pinter, Randy Pinter, Mike Pinter, Greg Lemmon, Kenneth Duesterhoft, Kenneth Landgraf and Wade Bage. Memorials may be given to St. Mary s Catholic Church Building Fund. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
