Dorothy Schulenberg

April 23, 1927 — February 23, 2016

Dorothy Elnora Landua Schulenberg, 88, of Burton, Texas went to her heavenly home February 23, 2016. Dorothy, or "Nanny" as many of us knew her, lived (a) life of strong faith, with a grateful heart and a loving spirit. She was born April 23, 1927 to Robert and Annie Broesche Landua. Her church home for her entire life was St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg. November 9, 1951, Nanny married Bill Schulenberg. She was a devoted and loving mother to her children, Marilyn and James. Nanny served her church and her community in many ways, some of which included teaching Sunday School, cooking for Vacation Bible School, serving lunch and a smile to many students at Burton Elementary, and serving as a Lay Minister to visit and serve Holy Communion to home-bound and nursing home residents. Her sense of humor and love of life and laughter was a joy for everyone around her. Nanny and her sisters, Catherine, Vernice, and Myrtle also worked together to keep their family history alive by helping with the yearly family reunions for Broesche and Landua families. Nanny truly loved these gatherings and talked often about her wonderful memories of visiting grandparents and cousins each Sunday when growing up. Nanny and many of her friends (Alice, Nevilee, Adeline, Mutzi, Flo, LD) experienced the loss of their husbands together and for years met weekly for lunch and laughter. While many of us can attest to her yummy homemade bread which she baked for many occasions and people, her favorite activities at home were always outside where she loved working on the lawn and riding her lawnmower. Nanny also loved spending time with her sisters and for many years ended each day with a phone call to Aunt Vernice. Throughout her life, she demonstrated her faith and positive outlook for her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren in so many ways for which we will be forever grateful. While we will all miss her so much for our remaining time on earth, we also thank and praise God for bringing her peace, comfort, and to her true "home." Our family would like to thank the staff at Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation for their exceptional care of Nanny these past few months and caregivers Clara Kasprowicz and Dorothy Taplin, for their loving help/care that allowed her to stay at home as long as possible. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, and many dear friends. She is survived by daughter and son in love, Marilyn & David Blakey, Sr. of Burton, son and daughter in love, James & Ruth Schulenberg of Burton, grandchildren David & Suzy Blakey of Burton, Mike & Heather Blakey of Burton, Steph & Steve Jarvis of Austin, Susan & Jim Kiel of Burton, Caroline & Jared Walls of Austin, Samantha Schulenberg of Austin, great-grandchildren Josh Daniels & Caitlyn Blakey, Hailey, Owen, Avery Blakey, James Jarvis, Annie & Kate Walls, Henry Kiel, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. Pallbearers will be David Blakey Jr., Michael Blakey, Steven Jarvis, Jim Kiel, Jared Walls, Ruth Ann Rhodes, Bob Grabarschick and Tommy Kammerer. Honorary pallbearers are Clara Kasprowicz, Carol Zwahr and all Nanny''s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorials can be given to St. Paul Lutheran Rehburg or Hospice Brazos Valley.
