Dorothy Sommerfeld

Dorothy Jean Sommerfeld entered eternal peace on March 11, 2017, at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 29 days.

She was born June 12, 1936, to Fritz and Paula (Kohring) Pohlmeyer in the William Penn community. She was baptized on July 12, 1936, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn by the Rev. C. J. Appel. She was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Brenham on April 2, 1950. She was married to Edward Lee Sommerfeld also at Grace Lutheran on November 7, 1954, and they enjoyed 51 years of married life.

Mrs. Sommerfeld retired from Seidel Schroeder & Company in 2001 after 42 years of service in public accounting. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Salem, active in the Dorcas Circle, and sang in choir for many years. She also served on the Audit, Stewardship, and Parish Education committees. She and Ed enjoyed serving many years as Luther League sponsors.

Her many hobbies included bowling, volleyball, dancing, gardening, and traveling with friends and family. For many years she enjoyed making desserts for Mr. Ed’s Catering. Lovingly know as “Nana,” she dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchild. Mom not only was a devoted wife and mother, but a dear friend to many and a mentor to many co-workers at Seidel Schroeder.

Mrs. Sommerfeld is survived by her children - a son, David and Kim Sommerfeld, and her daughters, Debbie and Bishop Ray Tiemann, Donna Muegge and fiance, Cary Dietzmann; grandchildren - Daniel Tiemann, Rebecca & Tyler Turbeville, Justin Menard, Kayla Menard, Catherine & Joey Tierce, Caroline Young and Cary’s son, Hunter Dietzmann; a great granddaughter, Farrah McLendon Menard; a sister - Maxine & Louis Schwarze, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her adored dog, “Muffy.”

Mrs. Sommerfeld was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Sommerfeld; her parents, Fred and Paula Pohlmeyer; and a grandson, Aaron Paul Tiemann.

Pallbearers are Lloyd Schwarze, Michael Schwarze, Jeff Schwarze, James Schroeder, Donald Winkelmann, Wade Seidel, Jeff Appel, and Daryl Lueckemeyer. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Hermann and Joyce Ahrens, Louis and Loretta Gaskamp, Verbie Weiss, Burney and Earline Boecker, Dick and Barbara Dietzmann, and the employees of Seidel Schroeder.

Funeral services will be at Salem Lutheran Church of Salem on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Charles Parnell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery following the service. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 13, at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

The family extends special thanks to the Hospice nurses and to Mom’s caregivers - Gandhi, Leyla, and Alice. Memorials can be directed to the Salem Lutheran Memorial Fund, Hospice Brazos Valley, or the charity of your choice.
