Edna Jurries

June 21, 1915 — August 16, 2013

Edna Webernick Jurries, age 98, died peacefully on August 16, 2013 at her home in Caldwell, Texas. She was born June 21, 1915, to Otto Webernick and Hulda Jeske Webernick in the Live Oak Community of Washington County. She was baptized as a child and confirmed on April 13, 1930, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill. In 1926 Edna''s family moved to the Prairie Hill Community where she attended Prairie Hill Schools. She graduated from Brenham High School and then attended Blinn Jr. College in 1934-1935. From 1936 to 1942 she taught at the Prairie Hill Elementary school. During those years she met Vernon Jurries, the love of her life, and they were married on July 21, 1940, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill. Their first child, Carolyn, was born on July 24, 1943. Edna and Carolyn traveled to San Diego to see Vernon before he shipped out during World War II. After the war, Edna and Vernon purchased their first home in Houston. Margaret, their second child, was born there on October 2, 1948. From 1951 to 1954 they were partners in Jurries Plumbing Company and in 1954 they went into the hardware/sporting goods business. In 1960 they moved to Brookshire, Texas where they purchased the local "Tastee Treat," a fast food and ice cream business. Then in 1968 they made their final move to the farm in the Snook/Caldwell, Texas area to raise Charlois cattle. While there, Edna was employed as a teacher''s assistant at the Snook ISD for 12 years. When Vernon died in 1972 she continued to raise the Charlois cattle he loved until 1975. Edna retired in 1980. During her retirement years she spent quality time visiting her sisters Irma Webernick and Hildegard Hueske. And she did some traveling, too. Edna loved playing dominos and played Texas 42 with a group of friends for 30 years. She was an Aggie at heart and enjoyed watching college football and basketball. She was a member of the Snook Brethren Church and its Senior Citizens and Christian Sisters church groups.
