Edward Scheffer was born December 18, 1919 in the Sandy Hill Community of Washington County to Charlie and Henrietta Buerger Scheffer. He was baptized February 1, 1920 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church by Pastor George Czerkus, and was confirmed May 5, 1936 by Pastor Paul Goglin at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill.

Edward served his country valiantly in World War II from 1942 until 1945, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart.

On October 10, 1946, he was married to Carrie Schramme in Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville by Pastor William Fehler.

He worked for Wendler Concrete and then for Brenham Broom and Mop for 18 years. In later years, he was employed at Prairie Lea Cemetery for over 25 years.

He truly loved his Lord and his church, and was a faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill until his death, with the honor of being the oldest living member. He served on the church council as treasurer for many years, and also sang in the choir.

He loved to watch his garden grow, and enjoyed working with the cattle on his farm. Along with his wife Carrie, he enjoyed playing pitch with friends and going fishing. Edward treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom spent time sitting on his lap. Being around his family was very important to him.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Billy and Frances Scheffer of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Michael Gajeske of Brenham; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Scheffer; sister, Mae Dell Thielemann; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Burney and Edna Schramme; grandchildren: Jamie Ahrens, Brian and Shelley Scheffer, Stephen and Deanna Scheffer, Sarah and Brandon Mueller, Charles and Jennifer Gajeske, Allen and Robin Gajeske; great-grandchildren: Courtney Andersen, Sterling and Stratton Scheffer, Brayden and Quinly Scheffer, Mary and Jake Gajeske, Lyann, Tyler, and Bynten Gajeske, and Braxton Mueller.
