Edwin Ed Alfred Mickan, husband of Cora Schroeder Mickan, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village surrounded by his family. Mr. Mickan was born September 10, 1919, in Serbin, Texas to Herman T. and Anna Mittasch Mickan. He was baptized September 28, 1919, in St. Paul s Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. H. T. Killian. He was confirmed on April 9, 1933, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. G. M. Fischer, and he attended Immanuel Lutheran School in Giddings, Prairie Hill and Navasota area public schools. A World War II Veteran, he proudly served his country overseas in the U. S. Army from 1942-1944, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Cora Sophia Schroeder at Zion Lutheran Church in Anderson on March 9, 1946, by Rev. L. Karcher. A partner of Lucas and Mickan Hardware stores in Navasota and Brenham, the successful partnership separated and the Mickan family moved to Brenham, establishing Mickan Ace Hardware in 1967. Actively involved in his community, he served on the council of Southwest Hardware and Implement Association, as a director of the Brenham Chamber of Commerce, President of the Brenham Downtown Merchants Association, President of Navasota Lions Club of Navasota, and member of the Brenham Lions Club. He received the Longest Living Member award from the Lions Club of Brenham, having been a Lions Club member since 1949. He also served on the Housing Authority Board of Directors for 23 years, and was member of the Handy Hardware Association Board of Directors. A former member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Navasota, he served his church as chairman, elder, treasurer, Sunday School superintendent, and teacher. Transferring to Grace Lutheran Church of Brenham, he continued to serve his Lord as a Men s Club member, and a church chairman, elder, and trustee. Throughout his long life he enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow up and then watching his great-grandchildren play. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved playing cards and dominoes, and spent time with his friends in the Real Old Men Eating Out Club ROMEO Club. He was an exquisite craftsman spending much time in his woodworking shop creating beautiful furniture pieces that will be treasured by his family for years to come. Survivors include his wife, Cora Mickan of Brenham; daughters Linda Wellmann and husband Freddie of Brenham, and Shirley Williams and husband Jon of Kyle; grandchildren: Heather Clark and husband Michael of Bryan, Brandie McBride of Austin, Ryan Rutledge of Anderson, Dawn Spence and husband Brian of Bryan, and Craig McBride, Jr., and wife Anna of College Station; great-grandchildren include Rylee Rutledge, Michael Clark, Faith Clark, Darrell Craig McBride III, Nathan Spence, and Jacob Spence; he was also survived by his sister, Mrs. Louise Ballmann of Hico, Texas. Funeral services for Edwin Alfred Mickan will be held Friday, March 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church of Brenham, with Pastor Matthew Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
