Egbert Bass

Egbert Harroll Bass of Brenham, Texas, died June 22, 2017 at age 96. He was born May 30, 1921, in Calhoun County, Arkansas, to Egbert Garland Bass and Eula Ramsay Bass. His paternal great grandfather, Doctor Bass, was one of the first settlers of Calhoun County, and his maternal great grandfather, Squire Allison Ramsay, was one of the founders of the town of Princeton and of Dallas County, Arkansas.

Bass, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, served in World War II as a B-17 Navigator in the Army Air Force in the 15th Air Force, Foggia, Italy. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant and flew thirty combat missions over Nazi Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, EAME Campaign Ribbon, Balkan Battle Star, Po Valley Battle Star, and North Apennines Battle Star.

After the War, Bass joined his father’s lumber company which operated in several towns in East Texas. Later, he became involved in residential construction in Houston, Texas, until his retirement.

He is survived by his sister, Regenta Bass Jenkins, of Brenham, Texas; one niece, Kathy Bass Miller, of Huntsville, Texas; five nephews: James O. Jenkins, Jr., and wife, Gail, of Brenham, Texas; Keith Harroll Bass and wife, Grace, of Huntsville, Texas; Kyle Ray Bass of Fischer, Texas; Rev. Bert E. Lyle, III and wife, Susie, of Huntsville, Texas; Frank Garland Lyle and wife, Julie, of Argyle, Texas; six great nephews and six great nieces; three great, great nephews and three great, great nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Hubert Allison Bass of Huntsville, Texas, and his sister, Eula Bass Lyle Tynes of Denton, Texas.

A member of the Methodist Church since his youth, Bass was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brenham, Texas.

A visitation will be held at Temperance Hill Church, Fordyce, Arkansas, at 1:00p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, followed by a grave side service at 2:00p.m. at Temperance Hill Cemetery.
