Eleanor Davis

September 19, 1950 — June 24, 2016

Eleanor Joyce Davis joined her mom and dad in heaven on June 24, 2016. Born in Laurel, MS, September 19, 1950, Joyce was the only child of Ernest and Mae Davis.

When both of Joyce's parents passed away within weeks of each other in 2002, Joyce's "Aunt Retta" and "Uncle J.T." Davis became her legal guardians. After lots of planning, prayers, and procedural processes, "Miss Joyce" embraced the State Supported Living Center in Brenham, TX (BSSLC) as "her new home" in March, 2004.

Instantly her joyous heart, kind spirit, love of God and her one-of-a-kind wit became well-known at the "school" as well all over the town of Brenham! She was voted "Queen of the Campus" for the annual parade in 2007. With a pure heart, eager enthusiasm to help anyone, and the innocence of a child, Joyce saw no flaws or disabilities in people. She consistently demonstrated Christ's unconditional love!

Joyce was a soloist and proud member of the BSSLC "Sounds of Joy" choir. They performed at every major local event in Brenham as well as traveling and competing throughout Texas, winning many medals and trophies. "Elvis" was Joyce's #1 idol, and in her words, "my man"! But she adored and dearly loved Mr. Arthur Curry, her BSSLC Choir Director, as the "other man in my life"!

Joyce's life was enriched by an off-site work program where she assembled plastic eating utensils and condiments into "picnic packages". She jokingly proclaimed every day "I worked my fingers to the bone"!

On her payday Fridays, the loving, caring school staff regularly took her shopping to her favorite "Dollar Tree" and often included her favorite dinner out...hamburger, French fries, and strawberry milkshake!

Joyce is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends...The world will miss her joyous heart!

The entire Davis family expresses our grateful, heartfelt appreciation and continued blessings to all the kind, dedicated staff and personnel at the BSSLC, especially those who loved, nurtured and attended Joyce in her home, "Cottage D".

A celebration of life and memorial visitation will be held Friday, July 15, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. at Lillian B. Wilder Chapel on the BSSLC campus, Brenham, TX, led by C.J. Jordan, Chaplain. Interment took place July 8, 2016 in Lakewood Cemetery in Jackson, MS.
