Elizabeth Anna Johanna Lehmann, 98, of Brenham, died June 7, 2006, in Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village in Brenham. Miss Lehmann was born Oct. 16, 1907, in Washington County, Texas, to Albert J. and Mary Schawe Lehmann. She was baptized Dec. 1, 1907, in Salem Lutheran Church of Salem by Pastor Johannes Mgebroff and was confirmed April 9, 1922, in the same church by Pastor William Utesch. Miss Lehmann attended public school, Blinn Memorial College and was a graduate of King s Daughters Hospital School of Nursing in Temple in 1931. She received her bachelor of science degree in public health nursing from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio in 1951 and her master of arts degree in sociology and education from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville in 1960. During World War II, Miss Lehmann served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in the South Pacific area of New Guinea and the Philippines for three years. Miss Lehmann began her nursing career at Milroy Memorial Hospital in Brenham in 1932. She also served as a public health nurse in Austin and initiated the school health program for the white schools of Brenham and Washington County in 1952 and continued until her retirement in 1973. A member of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham, Miss Lehmann was a member of the women s circles, where she served in various capacities. A former member of Salem Lutheran Church of Salem, Miss Lehmann served there as Sunday school teacher for 14 years and also initiated and organized the women s evening circle, for which she served as chairman. Miss Lehmann served as a board member of various state organizations: Texas Nursing Association; Lutheran Social Service of Texas; Texas Lung Association Houston, formerly Washington County Tuberculosis Association 1952-1974; and charter and board member of German-Texan Heritage Society. She was a charter and board member of the School Health Section of Texas State Teachers Association, District VI; a volunteer for American Red Cross Washington County 1940-1973; member of the advisory council of the original Home Health board here in 1981, Blinn College Licensed Vocational Nursing program until 1978, and the local LVNA #34 until 1981; and a member of Brenham Louise Giddings Retired Teachers Assocation, American Legion Post 48, German-Texan Heritage Society and Gamma Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Miss Lehmann served on the Washington County Historical Commission for 14 years and researched and compiled names of early German immigrants, 1840s-1860s, to Washington County for the persons whose ancestral roots began in Washington County soil for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library and the Brenham Heritage Museum. She also researched and compiled genealogical family history dating to the 1600s in Europe, researched and prepared information for Texas Historical Commission markers for several Washington County Lutheran churches. Miss Lehmann contributed numerous articles on early German immigration to Washington County to the Journal of German Texan Heritage Society. Miss Lehmann was a former member of the Pilot Club, serving as president two terms, and member of the American Association of University Women. Miss Lehmann was the recipient of many honors including: 20 years of service in the Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross 1970, invaluable and devoted supporter of the Texas Nursing Association 1979, an Outstanding Older Citizen by the Department of Aging in Washington County 1980, the Ehrenstein for exceptional dedication and achievement in furthering the German heritage in Texas 1980, and invaluable and devoted service to Home Health-Home Care 1990. Survivors include her sisters, Leona Lehmann, Dula Schroeder and Mary Dell Hueske, all of Brenham; nephews, Roy B. Schroeder and wife Lorena, Glen A. Schroeder, Milton Fred Hueske and wife Linda, Luther J. Hueske and wife Katie of Brenham; niece, Mary Ann Hueske Marshall and husband Paul of Austin; great-nieces, Cassie Hueske, Cory Swor and husband Blake and Kelly Flisowski and husband Kevin; great-nephews, Wade Hueske, John Hueske, Ryan B. Schroeder and fiancée Jennifer Randermann, Jay C. Schroeder and Glen C. Schroeder; great-great-niece, Karleigh Brooke Flisowski; great-great-nephew, Lawson Blake Swor; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers-in-law, Roy Schroeder and Milton R. Hueske. The family will receive visitors from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 9 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 10 in St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Lawrence Bade officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Pallbearers will be Luther J. Hueske, Milton F. Hueske, Glen Schroeder, Roy B. Schroeder, Paul Marshall and Kenneth Lehmann.
