Elmer Franklin Marburger, 83, of Brenham, Texas passed away unexpectedly on December, 19, 2024. He was born on December 28, 1940 in Burton, Texas to Benjamin and Meta Alaminsky Marburger.
Visitation with the family will be held from 4 until 6 PM on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 23, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Glenn Hohlt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Elmer was baptized and confirmed at St. John's United Church of Christ in Burton.
He attended Harrisburg and Burton schools.
He was united in marriage with Dorine Blum Marburger on November 29, 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church and they celebrated 65 years together this year.
Elmer served in the Army National Guard of Texas and as a reserve of the Army for 6 years being honorably discharged on December 11, 1971. While in the Army National Guard, he attained the qualification of Military Expert Marksman. He was told on more than one occasion that he did not need to participate in shooting practice because he was just wasting bullets. Instead, he was asked to train others to shoot. After the tragic day at the University of Texas Tower in Austin in August 1966, he was visited at Camp Mabry by law enforcement and asked if he would be willing to assist as a counter sniper if called upon in the future as there was no SWAT at that time. He was ready to serve if called.
Elmer worked at Carnation Milk and later retired from Washington County Road and Bridge in 2006. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on the farm with the cattle and riding his tractors, playing pitch, making bar-b-que, attending the local country opries and in his earlier years, playing softball. He also enjoyed traveling, but always liked getting home to tend to the cattle. Elmer was quite the prankster as he always enjoyed playing practical jokes on his family and friends. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Meta Marburger, an infant sister, father-in law and mother-in-law Herbert and Marie Blum, sisters-in-law Mary Schwettmann, Kathy Raffo and Marilyn Raffo, and brother-in-law, Bill Schwettmann.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Dorine Blum Marburger; daughters, Lisa Conner and husband Craig; Lori Wittner and husband Rodney; son, Michael Marburger; grandchildren, Katelyn Wittner, Kathryn Smith and husband Michael, Emily Conner and special friend Cody Knight, Matthew Conner and wife Melissa, Allison Marburger, brother-in-law, Dave Raffo, nephew Alan Schwettmann and wife Brandy, niece Vicki McGuire and husband Gary.
Serving as pallbearers for Elmer will be Matthew Conner, Michael Smith, Cody Knight, Nathan Kelm, Alan Schwettmann, Gary McGuire, Marshall Harrell and Craig Blum. Honorary pallbearers will be Joyce Marburger, Mark Marburger, Gary Marburger, Beth Kunkel, Homan Miiller and the Tuesday and Thursday card playing groups.
