Funeral services for Elsie Spreen Winkelmann are scheduled for 4 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2013 at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill, with Pastors David Hansen and Virgil Pecht officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. The family will receive family and friends Sunday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Mrs. Winkelmann, the widow of Walter C. Winkelmann, passed away April 11, 2013, at the age of 96, in Scott and White Hospital in Brenham. Born October 25, 1916 in the Prairie Hill Community of Washington County, Elsie was the daughter of John F. and Ella Wernecke Spreen. She was baptized Nov. 12, 1916 at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill, and confirmed there on March 29, 1916. She attended the Prairie Hill School. On October 25, 1939, she married Walter C. Winkelmann at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill, where she remained a lifelong member. Elsie provided a loving and nurturing home for her family. She loved working in her garden, and canned vegetables from the garden for her family to enjoy. Playing cards and dominoes and watching baseball on t.v. were favorite pastimes, as well as visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Walter Winkelmann, Jr. of College Station; daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Marvin Haevischer of Brenham; grandchildren: Cindy and David Keathly, Cheri and Nathan Addicks, and Christy and Keith Dallmeyer; great-grandchildren: Aubree Haevischer, Ashley Keathley, and Joshua, Jonathan and Jessica Devine; brother and sister-in-law John W. and Mildred Spreen of Brenham, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Burney and Edna Schramme of Brenham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her parents, John and Ella Spreen., and a brother, Herbert Spreen, Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. Her grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Funeral arrangements for Elsie Winkelmann are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham.
