Emma Elise Mertz Naegeli, 93, of the Latium community, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center. She was born September 2, 1916 to Wilhelm J. Mertz and Florence Edith Williams Mertz in the Wesley community. On November 27, 1919, she was baptized by Rev. J. Appel in Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome, and confirmed on March 21, 1931 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine by Rev. Carl Ziehe. In July 1935, she was married to Walter Oscar Naegeli in Anderson, Texas . They were blessed with four sons, one daughter, five grandchildren , and six great-grandchildren. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter Naegeli on July 10, 1977, a son, Lloyd Naegeli, and two children in infancy, two sisters, Evelyn Ullrich and Lenora Worthy, and two brothers-in-law, Harry Ullrich and Wilfred Schulz. Survivors include two sons, Arlin Naegeli and spouse Carol of Burton and Claude Naegeli of Burton; five grandsons: Lloyd Naegeli, Jr. of Austin, James Bruce Naegeli and spouse Mari of Bullard, Alan Naegeli and spouse Beth of Austin, Stephen Blair Naegeli and spouse Lori of Katy, and Gary Naegeli of Florida; six great-grandchildren: Kara Naegeli, James Cade Naegeli, Kyle Stephen Naegeli, Kaylen Rose Naegeli, Kristen Lee Naegeli, and Carrie Blackwell. Her family also includes a sister, Hilda Schulze; brother, Willie Mertz and spouse Vernell, and two special nieces, Gloria Marburger and Marcella Feagin of Brenham. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Emma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed quilting, baking, and gardening. Funeral services for Emma Elise Mertz Naegeli will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby with Pastor Linda Mosley officiating. Burial will follow in the Mayer Cemetery Her grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation with family and friends will take place Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Foehner Funeral Home in Burton. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby or to Hospice Brazos Valley. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Foehner Funeral Home in Burton.
