Emma Seeker

July 18, 1915 — July 28, 2005

Emma Bertha Seeker, 90, of Brenham, died July 28, 2005, at the family residence. Mrs. Seeker was born July 18, 1915, in Washington County, Texas, to Edward Sr. and Emma Schlottmann Ehlert. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. Mrs. Seeker attended Rocky Hill School and was a graduate of Blinn Academy. She received her bachelor of science degree from Sam Houston State and her master of education degree from the University of Houston. On October 11, 1936, she was married to Edwin August Seeker, Sr., in San Antonio by Rev. Paul Czerkus. She had a great passion for teaching children and taught for over 40 years in Wonder Hill, Burton Elementary, Rocky Hill, Prairie Hill and Brenham Elementary schools. Mrs. Seeker was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 19 years, was a former member of the choir and was a member of the Women of the ELCA Mary Martha Circle. Mrs. Seeker inspired the History of Washington County Public Schools as a 1986 Sesquicentennial project for the Brenham Louise Giddings Retired Teachers Association, of which she was a member. As a member and former president of Independence Historical Society, she was instrumental in preserving and restoring the J.P. Cole s house. She was also a member of the Prairie Hill-Rocky Hill Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Mrs. Seeker s inspiration was found in the words of Reinhold Niebuhr in the following prayer: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Even after her memory failed, she was still a math whiz. Her family appreciates the wonderful care given to her by Judy Steinfeld and Hospice. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Edwin Jr. and LaNell Seeker of Brenham; a daughter, Emma Jean Seeker of Brenham; two grandsons and their wives, Russell and Tina Seeker of Brenham and Troy and Carol Seeker of Brenham; three great-grandchildren, Colby, Hunter and Emily Seeker; a sister-in-law, Dolores Seeker of Brenham; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and former students. Mrs. Seeker was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin August Seeker, Sr., on July 17, 2005; her parents; her brother, Dr. Edward Ehlert Jr.; her sister, Henrietta McCall; two sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law. The funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1 in St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill with Dr. Sue Beall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be Linda and Garral Tiaden, Connie and Barnay Glaesmann, Christin and Kenneth Seeker and Donna Seeker.
