Ersel Ray Broom was transferred to his heavenly home into the unfailing open arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Feb. 29th, 2016, at 83 years of age. He was born January 10, 1933 to father Rube Broom and mother, Ruby Lee Ferguson Broom in Pineland, Texas. He was a 1950 graduate of Lutcher Stark Senior High School in Orange, Texas. Ray served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War era. In 1979 he married Shirlee Thompson in San Diego, CA.
He was employed for 22 years by the Federal Government – Department of the Navy, El Toro Marine Base in El Toro, CA, starting as a boilermaker and rising to the position of Mechanical Engineering Technician. He played a major role in the sale of the marine base to the city of Tustin, CA
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Angela Amarosa; and by his sister, Frances Bartram. Survivors include his wife, Shirlee of Brenham, TX; sons Michael Brown and wife, Debby and Ersel Ray Broom, Jr. of California; daughter, Kathy Broom of Oklahoma; grandchildren Anthony Ray, Taylor Nicole, Lydia, Meagan and Rebecca; sister, Mary Morgan and husband Charlie of Brenham, as well as three great grandchildren and four nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham with Pastor Mike Smith officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 1 P.M. Burial will be at 2 P.M. Sunday, March 6, 2016 in King Cemetery in Milam, TX. Memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army, P. O. Box 2389, Stafford, TX 77497
