Ervin Reuben Schulz, 88, of Brenham, died May 18, 2018, in Brenham.
Funeral services for Ervin Schulz will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton with Pastors Charles Stark and Risa Garza officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 21 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
Mr. Schulz was born January 3, 1930 in the Burton community, to Herman and Elsa (Meinkowsky) Schulz. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton, where he was a life-long member and served on the church council.
He attended Burton schools and graduated from Burton High School in 1948. He also graduated from Blinn College. Mr. Schulz served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict. For more than 60 years he was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He served as past commander of the American Legion.
Mr. Schulz was city secretary of the Brenham Men’s Bowling Association and also league secretary of the Tuesday Night League for many years. He was employed as purchasing agent at Sealy Mattress Co. for 48 years.
For many years he was involved in Little League while Terry played. He attended most of Terry’s high school and college games. His greatest joy was seeing his son receive his degree from Texas A&M University. He loved the Aggies, Astros and local sports. He loved going to the Aggies’ football games tailgating with Aggie friends. He loved fishing, especially when he took Jo, Shane and Reid to a lot of fishing holes.
On June 17, 1956, he was married to Mary Jo Bentke at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. He loved his church, his family and extended family, and he loved life.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Schulz; son, Terry Dean Schulz; niece, Dorothy Welch; great-nephew, John Welch and wife Crista and their daughter Alixas; and niece, Ann Schulz; brother-in-law, Raymond Bentke and wife Verna Mae; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bentke, Donna Bentke and Rosie Bentke; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews; cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mom and dad; brothers and sister-in-law, Wilfred and Hilda Schulz and Felix Schulz; nephews, Fred Schulz and Don Welch; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herman and Emma Bentke; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bernarr and Alma Place, Bill and Georgia Mae Bentke, Ida and Johnnie Kaechler, Alfred Bentke, Melvin and Christine Bentke, Lois and Fred Ruemke, Herman Bentke Jr. and Glenn Bentke; nieces, Vickie Hertel and Shelby Bentke; and nephew Carson Kaechler.
Pallbearers will be Delinda Bass, Elizabeth Walker, Brenda Meadows, Rick Federwisch, Don Williams, Larry Schneider, Brad Bentke, Matt Bentke, Shane Bentke, John Welch and Charles Hertel. Honorary pallbearers are his card playing buddies, Charles Giese, Roy Gillum, Charles Hertel and Bob Guira, and all his nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank Dr. Alford, Aurbrey Eickenhorst and Holly Boeker for all the help, also AMA Home Helath staff and our great sitters who took such great care of Erv, especially Hinda Lott and Melonie Walker. Many thanks to the staff, nurses and nurse aides for the great care given to us at Brenham Nursing and Rehab.
