Erwin Ernest Schmidt, 95, the husband of Tillie Broz Schmidt, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 in College Station Medical Center, College Station, Texas. Erwin was born August 9, 1913 in Welcome, Texas to Henry and Ella Platte Schmidt. He was baptized September 6, 1914 and confirmed April 4, 1928 at Welcome Lutheran Church of Welcome, Texas. Erwin was married to Tillie Broz on July 22, 1944, at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Frelsburg, Texas by Rev. Edward Gieser. In 1995 Erwin was confirmed in the Catholic faith at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Industry, Texas. Mr. Schmidt was educated in Welcome Public Schools and proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1942 until 1946. He served in the Coast Artillery, Field Artillery and Air Force Aviation Engineer Battalion in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. After his service in the army he returned to the Industry, Welcome and Bleiblerville area where he was self employed as a mechanic in the tractor repair business. He was also employed by Washington County Tractor Company of Brenham and Scattered Oaks Ranch in Bleiblerville. He enjoyed his cattle ranching, saltwater fishing and time outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ella Platte Schmidt, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Frances Pilcik Broz, brothers, Henry Schmidt, Monroe Schmidt, sister, Bertha Wittner, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe Plasek, and John and Georgia Broz. . Survivors of his loving family are his wife, Tillie Broz Schmidt of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law Dorothy Jean and Adolph Charles Wehmeyer of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Jomaye Schmidt of Brenham. Granddaughters are Debbie Lynn Wehmeyer of Brenham, Blair Schmidt of Brenham, and Brenna Schmidt and fiancé, Mike Clements of Pearland. Erwin is also survived by his sister, Emily Shupak, of Victoria, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eddie and Marie Broz of Bleiblerville. Funeral services for Erwin Ernest Schmidt are Monday, March 30, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Industry with Father Tim Bucek officiating. Burial will be in the Industry Catholic Cemetery. A Rosary/Wake will be celebrated Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church of Industry, Texas.
