Esther Ehlert

Esther Hahn Ehlert, 92, of Prairie Hill, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in Brenham Rest Home, where she had resided since experiencing a massive stroke in October, 2001. Mrs. Ehlert was born July 30, 1911, to Ernest and Rosena Boortz Hahn in Live Oak Hill, Washington County. She was baptized on Sept. 10, 1911, in St. John Lutheran Church, Prairie Hill. Esther was educated in the Live Oak Hill School. She was confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church on April 5, 1925, by the Rev. Paul Gogolin. On Dec. 22, 1935, she married Albert Ehlert in St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill. To this union were born three children. Her husband of 22 years, Albert, preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1957. Esther was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill. She was a charter member of both the Prairie Hill Ladies Aid as well as the Women of the ELCA. She was also a past member of the Prairie Hill/Rocky Hill Volunteer Fireman s Auxiliary as well as the Washington County Home Extension Agency. She was a homemaker and a seamstress for Lange s Tic Toc and Nat s Tiny Tots for a period of 20 years before her retirement. Esther s funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8. The service will be held in St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Sue Beall will officiate. The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel Monday, June 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Her survivors include her daughter, Sue and husband Dr. Robert H. Wernecke of Austin; son, Albert Ehlert III and wife Geneva of Prairie Hill; and daughter, Pat and husband Dee Schroeder of Prairie Hill. Grandchildren include Scott Wernecke of Houston, Kim Kraft and friend Juan Alcala of Prairie Hill, Dr. Cindy and John Gay of Dallas, Sara and Chad Gerke of Pearland, Albert Wayne Ehlert of Prairie Hill and Leigh Anne and Jerome Cavner of Brenham. Esther is also survived by her great-grandchildren including Madison Wernecke of Houston, Mina Kraft and Lea Alcala of Prairie Hill, Robert Coleman Gay and Matthew Ryan Gay of Dallas. Two sisters mourn her passing: Lillie Hahn of Brenham and Marjorie and husband Wilber Holdt of Brenham. A special niece, Vivian Leedy and her son Austin; and a life-long friend, Hilda Schlottmann of Prairie Hill, also survive. Esther will also be mourned by her many friends in this community. Esther s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Esther was always a giver of herself. She loved her God and her family and friends. A special thanks goes to her care givers at Brenham Rest Home. Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
