Eugene Gaskamp, 69, of Bellville, Texas, ended his earthly journey on November 30, 2018. He was born January 17, 1949, in Brenham, Texas to parents Herbert and Hattie Mertins Gaskamp. He was baptized and later confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn, Texas. On August 21, 1971, he married the love of his life, Janice Schilling and for 47 years they have faithfully been by each other’s side. His children, Amy and Marcus, as well as his grandchildren, Rick, Michael, Eric, and Gwen, will always remember him as a loving Daddy and “Pops.”
Gene was a sports fan and spent many hours playing baseball and basketball when he was young. He was proud to have been a part of the 1964 Brenham Senior League World Series team who finished second in the nation. When his health no longer allowed him to play, he enjoyed watching any sport on television he could find. He was employed by Brenham Wholesale, Co., Harrison Farm Service and the Brenham State School. Countless hands of the card games “Pitch” and “Shanghai” were played throughout his life which allowed for laughter and fellowship with family and friends. He cherished his grandchildren and could be found on school holidays and summers leading an intense game of Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Candyland, or Hi-Ho Cherry-O to pass the day. A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bellville, he proudly served as an usher for many years as well as on church council and various other church committees. He was a quiet and kind man with a gentle soul. He was trustworthy, dependable and never late for anything. He loved to travel and enjoyed the annual summer vacations he took with his children and grandchildren. He looked forward to his monthly trips to Louisiana where he could visit with his bus friends. During this last year he spent time enjoying the simple things like a hot cup of coffee, a good game of cards, old western tv shows, and visits from family and friends. Gene was strong in his faith and gave his family such comfort as he approached the final chapter in his life without fear but with an unfailing trust that he would be wrapped in the loving arms of God. “Then his master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master,’” Matthew 25:23.
Gene is survived by his wife, Janice. Children Amy and Jason Pieper, and Marcus and Dr. Miranda Gaskamp. Grandchildren Rick, Michael, and Eric Cano, and Gwendolyn Gaskamp. Uncle and Aunts, Clarence and Bernice Gaskamp, and Florence Gaskamp, along with numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers Vernon Gaskamp and Forrest Gaskamp, mother and father in law, Delphine and Gladys Schilling, and niece Laura Schilling.
