Evelyn V. Dornhoefer Spies, 82, widow of Allen Spies, died October 9, 2009 in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Born February 2, 1927 in Fayette County to Albert and Lydia Ullrich Dornhoefer, she was baptized in Windedale Lutheran Church by Rev. Brownette, who also later confirmed her in the same church. On October 23, 1949, she was married to Allen Spies in Round Top Lutheran Church by Rev. A. B. Weiss. She received her education in Winedale School and later her GED in Houston. A member of Round Top Lutheran Church until they moved to Houston in 1957, she joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Houston. She worked for the public schools in Houston in the cafeteria and after moving back to Brenham in 1978 after her last child graduated, she worked at Blinn College in the cafeteria. She also served as part-time custodian at St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham. Upon her retirement, she sewed many costumes for the Maifest, and was also a babysitter. Other hobbies included making crafts for craft shows, and quilting for her children and grandchildren. She also visited nursing homes, was a member of her Sunday School class, as well as an auxiliary member of the Sons of Herman. She was thankful for all the many kindnesses shown her by her many friends. Survivors include three children and their spouses: Gary and Gayle Spies of Farmington, New Mexico; Bob and Bonnie Spies of Glen Rose, Texas, and Danny and Diana Batdorf of Brenham, as well as ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also has one surviving sister and her spouse, Buddy and Ruby Meier and three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Herbert Koester, Verda Krause, Melba Muske, and Floradell and Leon Boecker. Her husband preceded her in death, as well as one sister, Leolie Koester and two brothers-in-law, Wilbert Krause and Leander Muske, one grandchild, Jennifer Spies and two nephews, Jerry Dean Koester and Jody Boecker. Funeral services for Evelyn V. Dornhoefer Spies will be held Monday, October 12, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Lawrence Bade officiating. Burial will take place at 12:00 noon in Houston''s Veteran''s Cemetery in Houston. Visitation with family and friends will take place Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul''s Evengelical Lutheran Church Radio Ministry in Brenham.
