Evelyn E. Mertz Ullrich went to be with her Lord on Feb. 22, 2006. She was born in the community of Welcome on July 16, 1919, to Wilhelm J. and Florence Edith Williams Mertz. Evelyn was baptized in Welcome on Nov. 24, 1919, by Pastor J. Appel. She was confirmed March 25, 1934, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine by Pastor Carl Ziche. Evelyn married Harry G. Ullrich on June 11, 1946 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The Ullrichs settled in Winedale on the George Adam Ullrich homestead. Mrs. Ullrich was a devoted wife and mother whose life was dedicated to serving her family and her community. She was a seamstress before her marriage. She delighted in her children and sewed most of their clothing for them. Later she made cabbage patch dolls and other toys for her grandchildren. She was known for her quilts, needlework and other crafts. Evelyn loved gardening and cooking, especially her legendary apple pies and angel food cakes. She is survived by sons, Henry W. Ullrich and wife Chris and Ray D. Ullrich and wife JoAnn; and daughters, Joy Ullrich Treude and husband Glenn, Edith D. Ullrich and Marjorie Kunkel Morris. Her grandchildren, in order of date of birth, are Earley Ullrich, Karl Ullrich, Gwen Stork, Glenda Oakes, Nicole Layland, Geoffrey Ullrich and Emily Ullrich. In addition, she has six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ullrich is also survived by brother, Willie E. Mertz and wife Vernell; sisters, Emma Naegeli and Hilda Schultz; sister-in-law, Curlie Nasuta; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Harry Ullrich; her parents; and sister, Lenora Worthy. Pallbearers are Karl Ullrich, Geoffrey Ullrich, Cassius Oakes, Robbie Stork, Arlin Naegeli and Henry Santana. Honorary pallbearers are Hank Santana and Dale Mertz. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 with Pastor Pam Werrell officiating. Burial will follow at Mayer Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Alzheimer s Association, 2909 W. Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX 77025-9992 or to Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
