Everett Dwight Land Jr., a loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on April 14, 2017 in Brenham, Texas.
He is survived by Charlotte, his wife of 67 years, four children and eight grandchildren – Christopher, his daughters, Karen Land Short, her husband Justin, Susan Land, and their mother, Diane Land; Linda and her partner, Gayle Goff; Patrick, his wife Susan and their children, Matthew, his wife Erin, Julie, Emily and Jacob; Andrew, his wife Mary and their children, Spencer and Nina.
In addition, Everett is survived by his sister, Betty Mack of Evanston, IL. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Everett D. and Telline Land and by his brother John, a marine killed in the Korean war.
Everett was born on September 25, 1925 in Iola, Kansas. He was an Eagle Scout, remaining active in scouting as a scout master for many years. After his junior year in high school, he joined the Air Force and received his wings at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. He served as a navigator and flight engineer on B-29's in the last days of WWII and then in the Reserves until his first child was born.
An avid Jayhawk supporter, while at KU he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and enjoyed a circle of friends that lasted over seven decades.
He worked as an international credit manager for Spencer Chemicals, which was bought by Gulf Oil (later Chevron), moving the Land family to Houston, TX in 1968.
On retirement, he and Charlotte relocated to Brenham, Texas, where, with help from classes at Blinn College, they learned the skills required to restore a 100 year old farm house over the course of 35 years. Throughout, they travelled months at a time on adventures all over the world – often driving back roads of the US and Canada in their small pickup truck with a camper.
We are especially grateful for the help and kindness of nurses at Brenham’s Scott & White Hospital and the caregivers at home – Erma Pruett, Geneva Kallie and Vanessa Harris.
Memorials may be directed to Unity Theater, Brenham, TX, www.unitybrenham.org, or to Boy Scout Troop 742 Summer Camp Scholarships, c/o St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 305 W. Third St., Brenham, TX. 77833.
