It has been said that the greatest task ever given a man is to raise a family. Felton Wayne Cox was born in Clegg, Texas on July 24, 1940 and passed on January 17, 2021 receiving comfort from his family.
Felton’s steadfast dedication to his family extended to his community where he served in numerous roles: Ricardo ISD School Board, Burton ISD School Board, various community boards, youth sports organizer and coach. Felton’s Christian faith was also paramount in his life where he served as a long-time member of fellowships at Greenvine Baptist Church and Ricardo Baptist Church where he was deeply loved and respected as Deacon, Sunday School Director and Bus Ministry Director.
Felton was raised by Eunice and Leroy Cox where their Christian faith was the focal point of their lives, his father serving as pastor in various small-town churches while also working to provide for his family. Strong family ties were built through overcoming meager beginnings and following the teachings of Christ.
Felton was an alumnus of George West High School. He married his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Jean Cox on July 21, 1962. They began their family in Houston, Texas with the births of their daughters Sherri Elizabeth Cox and Lisa Kay Coufal. In 1967 they moved to Kingsville, Texas where they would have their son, Troy Scott Cox, and Felton would begin his 36-year career at Celanese Chemical Plant. During his working career, Felton’s natural curiosity and eagerness to learn served him well as an Operator and Operations Specialists, Plant Fire Team Member and Fire Chief.
Felton’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was the ultimate taskmaster and encourager with a passion for development of his children, selflessly giving of his time and resources as a way of life. After raising his own family, he became one of the greatest sports fans in the state of Texas, spectating the endeavors of those who called him Papaw: Zachary Paul Coufal, Sierra Brooke White, Kyndal Kate Coufal children of his daughter Lisa Kay Coufal and son-in-law Paul Scott Coufal of Burton, Texas as well as Kyle Preston Cox and Cailyn Faith Cox, children of his son Troy Scott Cox and daughter-in-law Shelly LeAnn Cox of Austin, Texas. Felton’s oldest daughter, Sherri Elizabeth Cox, currently resides in Boerne, Texas where she works with children and adults with special needs and often hosts family gatherings.
Felton is also survived by his sisters Laverne Stapleton, Loretta Thompson, Priscilla Piercy, his brother-in-law Bob Piercy, Brooke White’s husband, Tyler White, and Zachary Coufal’s fiancée, Ryan Kate Golden, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
