Florence Harmel

Florence B. Harmel, 88, of Brenham, died February 11, 2008, at Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Florence was born on August 14, 1919 in Washington County, Texas to William and Louise Landua Korthauer. Florence was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg. She became a child of God through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on November 2, 1919 with the Reverend Herman Weber officiating. Florence reaffirmed her faith in the rite of confirmation on October 2, 1932. Florence was united in marriage to Edwin Harmel on November 30, 1939 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg with the Reverend C.A. Lehne officiating. On Feb. 9, 1944, God blessed them with one son, Donnie Edward. Florence taught Sunday school, was a member of the Sarah Circle and was a volunteer member of the Trinity Medical Auxiliary. She was a homemaker and her hobbies included sewing and cross-stitching. Donnie was united in marriage to Sherry Boehme. God blessed them with three daughters and their husbands, Shelia Renee and Bret Kapner, Karen Denise and Eddie Garza, Tonya Elizabeth and Jay Carroll. Florence also had the great joy of welcoming into this world four great-granddaughters and one great-grandson, Heather Nicole Kapner, Chelsea Michelle Kapner, Bailee Elizabeth Carroll, Donnie Edward Garza and Kayla Marie Carroll. Death became a reality for Florence''s son Donnie on October 19, 1997 after a long struggle with cancer. Florence was also preceded in death by her husband Edwin on May 20, 2007; her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law; six sisters; and five brothers. Celebrating God''s promise of life after death and salvation for Florence''s life are her daughter-in-law, Sherry; three granddaughters and their husbands, four great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; sister-in-law, Lydia Oevermann; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 12 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg with Pastor Teresa Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg or to the Donnie Harmel Endowed Scholarship. For the scholarship, checks should be made payable to Texas A&M Foundation.
