Frederick Hink

Frederick Warren Hink, 81, of Chappell Hill, Texas passed away on February 26, 2021 at Scott and White Hospital in Brenham, Texas after a lengthy illness. He was born on January 29, 1940 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Burton William Hink and Mary Bernice (Waugh) Hink. He grew up in Houston, graduating from Sam Houston High School and in the class of 1962 Texas A&M University. Fred had a wonderful life full of great adventure and success. His work in the oil industry led him all around the world. As a drilling engineer, he had his first experience working for Sperry Sun Well Surveying Company on contract with the Atomic Energy Commission at the Nevada Test Site in Mercury, Nevada and in Amchitka Island, Alaska. He was responsible for directional drilling of boreholes for underground nuclear detonations after aboveground testing had ended. The company then moved Fred and family to England from where he continued his work in directional drilling and reservoir testing in the North Sea, Norway, Holland, Australia, Japan, Abu Dhabi, Malaysia, Iran, Morocco, Chad, Nigeria, and Singapore. He was instrumental in the development of Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technology used in the North Sea. Fred and family returned to Texas in 1973 and worked on projects for Exxon and Amoco Oil, mostly in South America and Japan. Fred also invested in and managed several small businesses (general rental business, drilling fluid business, and an electric wireline business). He also worked for The Bob Founet Company as the South Texas manager in Corpus Christi. Fred and family returned to Houston and consulted for the utility industry using his directional drilling expertise for river crossings and right-of-way work. Fred was an exceptional athlete as he ran track at Texas A&M and was a trophy winning tennis player. He was an exceptional photographer, scuba diver, and held a private pilot license. His great love of outdoors was reflected by the many family camping and skiing adventures. He was an avid reader and mostly enjoyed mysteries. Fred is survived by his wife Helen Hink of Chappell Hill, his son Fred B. Hink and wife Kirsten of Houston, his son Geoffrey Hink of Chappell Hill, his brother Sherman Hink and wife Phyllis of Houston, his sister-in-law Glenda Hink of Tyler, his granddaughter Christina Hink of London, England and his grandson Harrison Hink of Houston, his mother-in-law Mary Bartlett of Brenham, and his many nieces and nephews. Fred is preceded in death by father and mother, his son Charleston Warren Hink, his brother Dr. Burton Hink, his sister Georgia Goeters, and his father-in-law Boykin Bartlett. Visitation will be Thursday, March 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel, Brenham, Texas and a graveside service will be held at South Park Cemetery, 1310 N. Main St., Pearland, Texas at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021. Officiating will be Rev. John Wood. Serving as pallbearers will be Fred Hink, Geoffrey Hink, Harrison Hink, Hank Hink, Steve Kennedy, and Alex Wood. Honorary pallbearer Charles Organ. The Hink family would like to thank all the ER doctors and nurses and floor nurse at Brenham Scott and White Hospital for their kindness and respect they showed Fred in his many stays in the last two months.
